Question mark Blue Ray or HDDVD? Old Thu Oct 26, 2006 3:43:17 PM #26007 Perm Link
So which one is going to win the battle?

I heard most of the porn industry is going to HD-DVD. Doesn't sound that important but it is a multibillion dollar industry.

Neither should win.

DVD is fine even for HDTV.

The market will decide and it probably will be HD considering the porn link.

neither, DVD is fine, and IMHO TV is fine without HD.
the DRM is the problem.

I read somewhere about NEC making drives that support both, I think that's the direction the industry will go and it really won't matter which one you use. If I had to choose one though, I'd go HD, considering Sony is on a downward spiral into hell with all the blunders in the past year.

I don't think you'll see dual format drives for awhile. I think one company that said they were going to make one basically gave up because the cost of putting that many lasers in the device was too high.

This is much worse than the DVD+R/DVD-R crap we still have.

There are only two reasons that could get me to get either format (HD-DVD is probably going to lose, by the way), and they are the Blade Runner and Star Wars definitive cuts. Otherwise both formats can piss off (barring PS3 games).

I can answer that. Zero. The PS3 is not out yet.

Also, The PS3 won't be released in quantity. Plus, manufacturers are having a tough time producing blue laser diodes.

It won't be released in quantitity this year. I'm guessing by Feb of next year the PS3 will determine whether or not Blu-Ray will triumph, because the HD-DVD drive on the 360 sure won't.

I for one will not be purchasing either. DVD is pretty damn good, I can't see anyone stopping the manufacture of DVD anytime soon. I'm sure a real "next-gen" video / data format will be out before the dust settles. Maybe someone will finally get Holographic media readers out to masses. They are talking about credit card sized "disks" that hold 30GB for about $1, disks roughly the size of a DVD that will hold 1.6TB for about $100. and for the most part we are talking about fairly common main components in the readers (a red laser and a CCD) that should be easy to mass produce if it ever gets off the ground.

I'm behind Blu-Ray. It seems to be the superior format with 50GB/disc and possibly 100GB on four layers to come. But most importantly "Blu-Ray" is a lot easier to say than "Aitch Dee Dee Vee Dee"!! Razz

But you guys are also talking about pre-recorded (and DRMed) movies. I guess HDDVD may win out there... I don't care.

I just hope Blu-Ray hangs around for storage (and for us to burn0rize our HD VC-1 encoded nonDRMed movies'n'music!) But having spent AU$700 for my first 1x DVD burner (and AU$140 for my 2nd 12x burner), I'll be waiting until I can get a versatile (like Region free Lite-On style) and fast Blu-Ray drive for under AU$100, and when the discs are reasonably priced (and have a good shelf life).

For the moment, DVD is pretty ... good! Huge Grin

Do you even know how many are preordered? a massaive amount. still, how many ppl know that xbox 360 had hddvd? i didnt know that till you guys said it. PS3 is mass advertsing that it supports blue-ray. anyway, why would you want to support something that holds less data? thats stupid in my opinion.

Truthfully, the PS3's launch (and as such Blu-Ray's support) will be hurt by the fact that there will only be 80,000 PS3's to be sold in Japan (where Blu-Ray is taking off) and 400,000 here (where niether is); not to mention the fact that even if you were able to import a PS3 to Europe (which you can't), it won't be able to play Blu-ray movies of the region and/or PS1 and PS2 games of the region and even (it is rumoured) PS3 games of the region. The main problem with the HD-DVD drive for the 360 is that it doesn't support HDMI, in addition to the fact that it is a $200 console add-on doomed to failure that won't play HD-DVD based games.

Frankly I say neither also since DVDs are fine and who has a good enough vision to notice the difference between a DVD, BluRay or HD-DVD movie?

I like BluRay for its massive storage capability. Its would make backing up easy.

I'll just stick with my good old DVD for now, my eyes are bad anyway and couldn't tell the differance even if I was looking at it.

And besides, all my porn is already on DVD, so why change now.
