I truely have never seen this before. A Intel Prescott CPU running at 3GHz was reporting that it was running at -128 degree Cel. It was pinned there and in the BIOS it was at positive 128.

We are going to swap out the CPU tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem. The system did shutdown due to a thermal event. So strange.

is the fan working at all? Did you put the thermal paste? (put enough of it?)

Negative 128 degrees C. If the CPU was pinned that high, the system would always shut down.

The heatsink and fan were both seated and working properly. I'll update this topic later today with more info about the result.

Have you ever considered, what if it IS that temperature? What if the core of the cpu exists in some pocket universe where the laws of physics are completely different and it's running insanely cold?

It turns out it was the motherboard. It was a D915GAG, but we just decided to not replaced the board and disabled CPU temp reporting. Cost savings...

good to know. if it's intel retail board, ti shoudl carry 3 years of warranty isn't it. intel should fix it for you. maybe a simple bios update can fix the problem.
