Not sure if this is a direct remake of the original Superman (Reeve), only with better flying FX and Lex Luther with a bald head (Spacey) instead of Hackman's 'wigs'. Hopefully there's something new besides just better FX... I might see it, being a fan of Superman the character.

No. It should take place after Superman 2 (disregard 3 and 4).

I hope this one makes Luther feel like a real villian. Luther shouldn't be a pussy and act like a pansy.

I'll be seeing it this week for sure. After Batman Begins, this should be okay, if not good.

Yeah, Gene Hackman wasn't even willing to shave his head for the part according to the DVD commentary on the original. Hopefully, Spacey
'bares some teeth' for Luther's role.

I've been watching for this upcomiing movie pretty closely.
It should take off as AS said, right after Superman 2. Superman sort of "disappears" for a while, we may find out why, and when he returns, it is ON.

If this is anything CLOSE to Batman returns, it will be a huge hit!
I loved the Superman's with Christopher Reeves. At my age at that time, those movies were the BEST! I am so looking forward to this installment.

And I can't hack Gene Hackman...I for one think he is an EXCELLENT actor and portrayed Superman's villian Lex Luthor in the Superman series in the 80's very well.

This has been a long time coming and come through several iterations before seeing the screen. Singer should do a nice job with it, as he did with the X-Men. At one point we could have ended up with Kevin Smith penning a script with a giant mechanical spider in it.

Darkseid or Doomsday would be freaking sweet, that's for sure. Or maybe even Parallax or Mongul. Speaking of comic book aliens I hope for the sake of all that is holy that Venom will be some kind of Alien and not some lame experiment. I mean, otherwise how will they explain Carnage, Toxin, et al?

At any rate, ABC did a story about how outraged the old folks were about the movie never saying "Truth, Justice and the American way!". Hasn't be been a hero of the world since the early nineties? I mean, not only that, but would he really want to represent "the American way" after Luthor won in 2000? (in the comics, not IRL obviously)

Saw Superman Returns. A little slow at 157 minutes or so, but I liked it. Not groundbreaking, but nice for most S fans. Even said, Superman needs an equal adversary next time...

Yeah, they kept the characters mostly the same as the first movie, Lex not excluded, with his wigs and sense of humor by K. Spacey.

I watched Superman 1 on DVD again, it has a comical approach with Lex Luthor (Hackman, yes he's a solid actor). I don't mind, but do wish Superman gets a really evil, powerful villain to battle in 'Superman Returns 2', and not the trio dressed in black again...(forget their names).

Honestly, there's really nothing new added to the Superman legend. It's really just another 'adventure' for Superman, where if you've seen the first one, you really aren't going to miss much here.

*NOT* the same old (Gene Hackman) Lex. Old Fri Jul 7, 2006 6:37:48 AM #18887 Perm Link
In response to NTSCrZhao #18879
Spacey started with a *base* of the Hackman Luthor, because it is supposed to take place after Superman 2. However, this Lex (after being imprinsoned for 5 years) is much more bitter and callous. He still has his ego, and he has no problems sacraficing magnificient things to obtain even grander things (Which falls in line with both the Comic book Luthor - post Crisis, and the cartoon Luthor, post "Superfriends" and pre "When Brainiac Attacks").

He's calculating, sinister, and despite some of the reprehensible things he's done, you still had to respect him. I think it was a great job.

Also, I have an advantage, I've never seen "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle", so the guy who played Lex's head-lackey (Kumar?) was not tainted by any ridiculous comedy for me.

Lastly, I've heard alot of people complain about the amount of melodrama. Lets take a look at how Singer directs and his buddies write. They enjoy a good story, they look at things as if it would span multiple movies, but can still stand alone. Much like with X-Men, you have introductions and establishments, then the next movie would be conflict, then a movie that would have resolution (this same theme was also used in the Matrix Trilogy, and yes, I know it was a different director and writers, but I think that's where Singer got the idea).

Now lets keep in mind, Superman has been gone for 5 years. GONE. No contact, no nothing. That's a massive change to how the world worked from what it's used to, and that leaves alot of questions up in the air, and alot of stuff to be addressed. So of course there'd be alot of melodrama, the old movies focused pretty heavily on the relationship between Lois and Superman/Clark, so it makes sense that this one would do so even more, to show how much that absence has affected their relationship.

In short, I think it was a great lead-in for many movies to come. Personally, I can see Lex recurring as the corporate mogul, maybe even using the ploy used in a few of the Superman cartoons and team up with Brainiac. Or perhaps just Brainiac on his own.

A Doomsday movie would have to be kept for last, though. Unless they really wanted to have the series go on and do the whole quadruple resurrection thing and so on and so forth.
