I made a new partition last night and installed it. still missing some drivers, but installs easy and looks great. There is one thing about it though, and that is the fact that it looks exactly like a KDE interface. It's more like "I can't believe it's not linux" than a new windows OS. Anyone else running it?

I have to admit that it looks more like an Apple interface than KDE.

KDE is getting better at usability, but it isn't there yet.

Vista looks too different and is too complicated for most people to use.

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!

I've seen it. It's all smoke and mirrors. I bet people will complain about how hard the interface is to use. Microsoft can't even get their own widgets the same.

Office, Windows, and IE all have different widgets.

It is totally Mac-like. In fact, I'm going to get a Mac for my next computer.

Just installed it last night, I'm reserving final judgement until I've used it a bit more. I had an issue initially finding a working 64 bit RAID driver for my SATA controller, but once that was resolved the install was near flawless. All of my hardware was detcted from the get go which shocked me. The only hardware I have had a problem with is my Harmony remote, the software doesn't seem to want to install. The interface looks nice, Those security warning popup's get a little annoying while playing with settings and installing software, but I guess it is a necessary evil. The new start menu is actually very well thought out and should make finding stuff a lot easier once I get more apps and junk installed. I really expected the new GUI to be slow and cumbersome, but it is actually nice and zippy. Going to have to to install some games on it tonight and see what I can break.

Got World of Warcraft up and running. Only issue I ran into there was i had to "Run as Administrator" to get patchs to apply. Seems logical though, the patcher downloads an executable, then attempts to shutdown WoW and run it, I would guess in general it isnt a bad idea to prevent most app's from doing this. Batelfield 2 install went off normally. EA includes a little warning popup in the installer that the game has only been tested in 32 bit enviroments. Game play is normal, no problems. Vista also seems to lag a bit less tabbing out full screen games than XP did.
I downloaded new software fr my Harmony remote, that works, but is not compatable with Aero, Vista automatically shuts off all the "pretty-ness" when I run it to update my remote and automatically goes back to normal when it closes. So it would appear Vista is aware of and gracefully handles incompatability with the new interface.
When running installers that fail because of lack of administrative rights Vista closes it pops you up a message that the installer appears to have failed and to click continue to rerun the installer, then automatically restarts with administrative rights. I have played this dance several times with Nero 7 with no luck though. Not suprisingly Vista refused to install any antivirus software I had. It does point you to a beta of Trend micro internet security which seems to work nicely.

Suprisingly the security center didn't offer it. That was where I expected to be going when I clicked on the "Let's find one for you" link. It does automatically install the Windows Defending software and Windows Update automatically installs updates for it. Windows update is also now local software, no more clicking through the web site.

Annoyances cleaning up my hard drive... Old Mon Jun 19, 2006 12:41:55 PM #18212 Perm Link
I have found the secuirty warnings reallllly annoying while trying to clean up my hard drive.

Vista quite nicely grabbed my old Windows folder, Documents and Settings folder, and Program Files folder and put them in a folder called Windows.old. The Documents and Settings folder is now replaced by a "Users" folder and there are two program files folders (on the 64Bit version anyway) one for 64bit software and a "Programs File (x86) for 32 bit software

I was working on cleaning up, deleting things I didn't need and moving files and organizing what I wanted to keep on that machine. Every step of the way deleting a folder moving a folder, etc was a secuirty warning.

Then I ran into my first real bug. When emptying the recycle bin or forcing a real delete on large amounts of files I have been having wierd problems.
"The folowing FOLDER <insert FILE name here> does not exist, would you like to create it?"
After a while the emptying recycle bin windows closes and a bunch of files are still not deleted. If I repeat the empty or delete one or two more times they eventually all delete, but it is pretty bizarre.

That's very interesting to hear.

I'm glad that Windows Update is a program instead of an ActiveX control.

Acutally not built INTO the OS is a good term for it. In XP IE and Windows explorer where one and the same. You logged in as an Administrator, you ran IE, IE ran as a process wth Administrative rights and all the power to really F($*K things up.
IE7+ on Vista runs in a protected mode. It has rights to nothing reguardless of the secuirty level of the user that launched it. It can write to 4 folders in the Temporary Internet Files folder. It can no longer talk direclty to or act as your operating system. Type in C:\ to IE6 and you get a familiar looking explorer window. Type it into IE7 and the secuirty broker kicks in warns you that Windows Explorer wants to launch and that it is outside of IE's protected mode. If you allow it, the broker executable launches Windows Explorer. Same with saving a file, or runnnig any sort of external software, the security broker touches your OS with privliges you grant it, not IE.
Also any plug-ins, BHO's, and controls run by IE run in protected mode. The browser virtualizes common registry keys and hard drive locations and will only read and write data to the virtual copies, also stored in the TIF Folder.
Vista also treats the TIF folder as if it is inherantly dangerous. I couldn't even get Windows Explorer to browse to it with hidden and system files set to view. If you manually type in the location it admits it is there and will let you browse it, but if you attempt to open a file from there you get a warning that running a system command on this file is unsafe.
Alot of good concepts for secuirty here. Time will tell if it is enough

I think you mean it is about time that Microsoft did that.

It was a mistake from the start to tie the browser into the OS.

never tried it, but I imagine it to be quite slow... I ran KDE with Composite (=transparency) for a while, and the difference, though only while running heavy apps, was noticable. And Windows has traditionally been slow.

Aero isn't that bad with speed.

I'm not to up to speed on the current variants of Linux distros, but Windows handles graphics at a higher system level (I think) and can do things faster...

I think.

I've seen occasional slow downs invoking the admin secuirty broker, the gadgets sidebar tends to take a bit too long to load on bootup for some reason, but in general use it is very responsive. After using it a while it would seem that the new "Super Fetch" technology actaully works, programs I use frequently open up almost immediatly now. According to MS super fetch actaully also pays attention to when you use programs the most as well and preloads different things at different times of the day, different days etc.

I was thinking about grabbing a trial of OneCare because I have been having occasional issues with the TrendMicro crapping out, but according to the OneCare website:

"Your computer must be running Windows XP in order to install Windows Live OneCare"

So apparantly TrendMicro is the only one with an antivirus solution at the moment
