Mandriva 2008.0 RC1 Released

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 6, 2007 at 2:14:50 PM
Mandriva has released a RC for the latest version of their distro. The interesting part is that it isn't feature complete! What the hell?

Quote

Mandriva Linux 2008 includes the following versions of the major distribution components: kernel 2.6.22, X.org 7.2, KDE 3.5.7, GNOME 2.19.6, Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.6, OpenOffice.org 2.2. Other major new features are the merging of the Beryl and Compiz 3D desktop technologies into Compiz Fusion, a new network management tool, a Windows documents and settings migration tool, and support for WPA-EAP. You can find an introduction to the most interesting new features in What's coming in Mandriva Linux 2008.

Palm Cancels Foleo

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 5, 2007 at 7:37:17 PM
Palm has cancelled its useless wanna-be laptop before it was released. Palm was touting this as the greatest thing ever. It wasn't.

Quote

"In the course of the past several months, it has become clear that the right path for Palm is to offer a single, consistent user experience around this new platform design and a single focus for our platform development efforts. To that end, and after careful deliberation, I have decided to cancel the Foleo mobile companion product in its current configuration and focus all of our energies on delivering out next generation platform and the first smartphones that will bring this platform to market," Colligan wrote on Palm's blog. Calls to Palm representatives were not immediately returned.

Don't try to save face. This product was horrible.

UK Judge: All DNA Should Be Recorded

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 5, 2007 at 5:40:54 PM
A UK Judge says it would be good to collect DNA samples from every person that steps foot inside the UK. This also includes residents living there. Police state much?

Quote

Shadow home secretary David Davis called for a Parliamentary debate and described the system for adding people to the database as arbitrary and erratic. Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman, said there was "no earthly reason" why someone who has committed no crime should be on the database - "yet the government is shoving thousands of innocent people's DNA details on to the database every month". The DNA database - which is 12 years old - grows by 30,000 samples a month taken from suspects or recovered from crime scenes. There has already been criticism of the database - the largest in the world - because people who are found innocent usually cannot get their details removed.

PC Power and Cooling Silencer 610 Power Supply @ Pro-Clockers

Quote

In today's world of power supplies we have seen units that boast power way beyond the limits that most of us would need this year or next. The PC Power and Cooling Turbo-Cool 1KW may be just one of those units. But just because PC P&C makes one of the best high powered units out there, doesn't mean they have forgotten about the individuals that don't need this much energy to power their rigs. So along comes the Silencer 610. The Silencer 610 may not be able to brag about huge power ratings but if it lives up to PC P&C's reputation, it can at least brag about solid stability amongst its rails.

US Bank to Fund Open Source Projects @ MadPenguin.org

Quote

For many open source enthusiasts, the problem is finding the funds to help support their favorite open source projects, which include various Linux distros. It's not that we do not have the money, it's the method of forwarding the necessary funds that's the problem.

Ultra X3 600Watt Modular Power Supply Review @ Tweaknews.net

Quote

"The Ultra X3 600W power supply has a lot to recommend. Its fully modular design and FlexForce cabling system are very unique and will be a boon to users who like to have neat, tidy installs. The cable assortment is complete and provides the user with plenty of connectors supporting a wide variety of configurations. The X3 is relatively compact, very stable and efficient. This should be more than enough PSU for the vast majority of users."

WinFast PX8600 GTS TDH Extreme Video Card at Modders-Inc.com

Quote

The new Leadtek/WinFast PX8600 GTS TDH Extreme graphics card with the GDDR3 memory clocked to 1000(2000)Mhz and the GPU set to 710Mhz it is set to be a real screamer for the money, but can it do it? We put this new card through some hard testing and it came out without a scratch.

TiVo HD @ TheTechLounge

Quote

"The TiVo HD is the mainstream consumer Series 3 TiVo. At $300, the device is more palatable to consumers who balked at an $800 price tag. The box has a smaller hard drive than the original Series 3 box, and doesn't come with OLED screen, THX certification, or a fancy case. So how does a $300 HD set top box work? Well, I will say it wasn't boring."

BFR Review: Mario Strikers Charged

Quote

Quote: If there was ever a character that could fit the definition of "Everyman" Nintendo's Italian, suspender-wearing, high pitched hero Mario could be it. Mario has done just about everything. From golf, to tennis, to bowling, to basketball, to building time machines, curing diseases, participating in the Olympics, fighting gigantic monkeys, baking cookies, driving go carts, and of course being an all around hero, Mario has done just about every activity under the sun.

Cooler Master Cosmos RC-1000 @ techPowerUp

Quote

The Cooler Master Cosmos is the company's newest high-end offering designed to be a follow up on the highly successful Stacker Series. The case did not only grow in dimension & weight but also offers a long list of new and unique features. You will find seperate hard drive drawers, four fans and foam covered side panels among many other details.

TTIC Micro Flow Intel S775 Water Block Performance Review @ Madshrimps

Quote

TTIC has been around since the late 90's, though it's only since few years that they jumped into the desktop CPU cooling market. Because of their advanced knowledge of heatpipe technology they have already accomplished quite a bit, now TTIC is exploring a very new world, water cooling. Two new products were being released, the so called Micro Flow series, and judging on its design we were anxious to see how it performed with a Quad Core CPU.

Logitech MX Air Review @ InsideHW.com

Quote

"Day after day, more and more computers move to living rooms, with more and more users using their computers from the comfort of their armchairs and couches. Logitech always had something to offer to such users, mainly products like universal remote controllers and wireless keyboards/mice. The MX Air model is a kind of a convergence of the mentioned products, offering the functionality of an RC and properties of a wireless laser mouse."

Nouveau Driver Q A (NVIDIA Driver Developer Questions)

Quote

"On the Phoronix Forums we have been running a Q&A with the developers of the Nouveau project. For those out of the loop or new to Linux, the Nouveau project aims to provide an open-source 2D/3D graphics driver for NVIDIA hardware. After collecting a number of questions from our readers, KoalaBR and Marcheu have answered these questions. The questions range from whether there will be open-source SLI support to asking if NVIDIA has ever contacted the Nouveau developers."

Thermaltake Tai-Chi M+ @ Bjorn3D

Quote

As notebooks become more powerful, they are also getting hotter. Many of today's gaming notebooks are made with high performance CPU, dedicated GPU, and a fast 7200 rpm hard drive. These components offer excellent performance but also generate tremendous heat, something you don't want to find on your notebook. Unlike desktop components, notebook components usually are not replaceable and even if they are, it is usually not easy to do by average users. Hence, the cooling of the notebook components are highly dependant on the level of craftsmanship used by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, due to the need to keep the notebooks light, sometimes it is not easy to offer the best cooling for all the top of the line CPU, GPU, and hard drives inside that one-inch portable unit.

Tripp Lite Smart1000LCD UPS @ techPowerUp

Quote

Most users these days know to at least protect their PCs with a surge protector, but in truth, that is not nearly enough. Surge protectors do not protect against blackouts, brownouts or "dirty" power, but an interruptible power supply can. Today we takes a look at the Smart1000LCD UPS from Tripp Lite. It is a 1000VA / 500W unit with a blue backlit LCD display that provides real-time power status.

Intel E6750 Core 2 Duo 1333MHZ FSB Processor Review @ Tweaknews.net

Quote

"The people that will be taking advantage of this new processor will be the new system builders trying to get their best bang for the buck at the moment. Seeing this processor can be purchased for under US$200, it is a lot cheaper than the US$320 E6700 it is replacing. In my opinion, Intel is inviting people to take advantage of this processor by cutting the price so drastically that the price difference could allow you to buy the different motherboard to take advantage of it."

ASUS Xonar D2 Ultra Fidelity Sound Card

Quote

Over recent years, ASUS has left a firm mark on the consumer pc market with a strong and ever growing list of reputable and reliable products, these including some of the best notebooks and graphics cards out there. Now they are extending their portfolio even further by throwing the gauntlet down to Creative and attempting to challenge them at their own favourite event; maybe even leaving with a gold medal too. All this remains to be seen but top marks right off the bat for having a crack at Creative who in my opinion have had far too much leg room in the sound card arena.

Antec Sonata III PC Case @ Pro-Clockers

Quote

It's easy to write rave reviews of Antec products. They've been in the industry long enough to know what PC enthusiasts want and they have a reputation for delivering it. Today, I'm excited to review the Sonata III. People might say I'm a little biased toward Antec. Most of the cases I've owned throughout the years have sported the Antec Logo. We could do a cell phone commercial showing off bars with the different sized Antec cases in my home. I may give them to friends, but I never throw them away. They're well-made and nice to look at. Now how can you trust me to tell you the truth about the Antec Sonata III? Simple: I expect more out of Antec. If they fail to deliver, I'll be the first to notice it and the first to say something about it.

Powercolor HD 2400 Pro 256MB PCI-E Video Card @ Pro-Clockers

Quote

To accommodate those mid-range users, Powercolor started manufacturing the HD 2400 series video cards. Every card in the HD 2400 Series has DirectX 10 support, 1080p, Universal Video Decoding, and HDMI with surround sound. Today, we have the Powercolor HD2400 Pro on our test bench. This card's $59 MSRP should definitely entice users who are looking for a mid-range gaming card with multimedia capabilities. Let's move right into our review to see just how the HD 2400 Pro stacks up to the demands of Windows Vista Ultimate and DirectX 10 gaming.

Next iPod: Running Mac OSX?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 4, 2007 at 1:50:54 PM
This is an interesting story. Apple may be putting OSX on the iPod. They could combine the iPhone interface and remove the phone part of it. That would be an interesting iPod.

Quote

But Apple makes another mobile device. It's called the iPod. And if the persistent rumors are fulfilled Wednesday during the latest episode of The Steve Jobs Show (a product presentation at San Francisco's Moscone Center), the iPod is about to get a whole lot more powerful. A wide-screen iPod that looks an awful lot like an iPhone seems like the most likely bet for the sixth generation of Apple's ubiquitous music and video player line. It also seems very likely that those new iPods will run the same stripped-down version of Mac OS X found on the iPhone, something even Jobs himself hinted at during a meeting with Apple employees on the eve of the iPhone launch.

Biggest Hole In Space, Ever!

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 3, 2007 at 3:11:11 PM
Scientists found a huge 1 billion light year hole in space. The actual finding is based on the cosmic microwave background. Interesting stuff.

Quote

The cold spot in question is an unexplained anomaly in the map of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) created by NASA’s WMAP satellite. The photons of the CMB coming from a region of the sky in the direction of the constellation Eridanus are colder than expected. Rudnick’s team started looking for radio sources such as radio galaxies and quasars in the direction of the cold spot. "Radio sources track the distribution of mass in the universe," says Rudnick. "They are the signposts for galaxies, clusters of galaxies and dark matter."

Russia Planning Moon Base

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 1, 2007 at 2:06:20 PM
Add Russia to the list of countries planning to setup a base on the moon. Looks like another space race will be occurring soon.

Quote

Russia had originally sought to join a U.S. plan to establish a moon base in 2024. But Perminov said earlier this year the U.S. rebuffed the offer to jointly explore the moon. On Friday, Perminov said Russia plans to complete its section of the International Space Station by 2015 and will begin working on a modernization of the Soyuz spacecraft used to transport cosmonauts and equipment to the station.

EA says "PS3 Sucks," making them both look stupid and incompetent.

Poster: Logan King
Posted on August 30, 2007 at 2:51:13 AM

Quote

"The truth is the PS3’s tools and the way it works just sucks. The truth is they are both virtually the same in terms of hardware when it comes to how powerful they are, maybe the PS3 has a few different things that makes it a bit more advance, and Sony has this idea that it is designed for optimal development but that’s a load of crap. In the last generation we would make the game for PS2 and then port it over to Xbox, but because Xbox was easier to develop for, we could actually enhance the title a little if we wanted to. The case with this generation is different, now we make the game for 360 first and then port it over to PS3, but we really don’t have the time to mess with how the PS3 works to really add to much more. It will change in the future, but for now it sucks.”

Well, this is bound to set the sparks flying. There are several parts of this statement that make it sound as if EA is completely incompetent, and others that actually sound viable. But in general, we can only compare to what we've seen from other developers on the PS3...and we have to conclude that EA, quite simply, is lagging behind. There are plenty of great-looking PS3 games on the way, and 2K Sports has already said one of their titles, NBA 2K8, would run at 60fps on the PS3, very much unlike Madden 08.

Linky.

Nice to see them using big boy words like SUCK

EA talk total rubbish, they are now a lazy 3rd grade developer that makes lousy games for maximum profit, not helped by the fact that most developers now are getting the hang of coding for the PS3; and even Ubisoft went on record as saying it was no more difficult to develop for the PS3 than the 360 (cue GRAW2) and that EA were mad in complaining that it was impossible to make the games equally as good.

OCZ Flex 2gb PC2-6400 CL3 Competition - XSReviews

Quote

* "Another memory competition but this time it's a kit of OCZ PC2-6400 2gb Flex memory. This kit has inbuilt water cooling capabilities and huge air cooled heatsinks. Designed to be the overclocker's dream, these modules are not something to be scoffed at."

ZeroTherm BFT90 CPU Cooler Review @ HardwareLogic

Quote

As one of the hottest products to hit the market today, the ZeroTherm BTF90 is classified as a high end CPU cooler solution geared for enthusiasts. Sporting a massive copper base, eight heat pipes, and copper fins, the BTF90 looks and feels to be the end-all CPU thermal cooling solution. Or is it? Let's take a closer look at this behemoth cooler and find out!

TweakTown's Intel X38 and AMD RD790 coverage

Quote

The MSI marketing people just sent through a shot of the almost final revision of their X38 Diamond with the new full cooper heat pipe cooling solution (the shipping version will be striped of DDR2 slots and will be DDR3 only). The X38 chipset does get quite hot and as a result, a rather exotic cooler is required to keep things in order but it is not quite as crazy as the previous types we have seen from MSI but almost. This heat pipe cools the PWM area, X38 Northbridge, ICH9R Southbridge and the final chip at the very bottom (which is used to control PCI Express lane sharing between the four PEG x16 slots). The top two slots will run at x16 electronically while the bottom two will operate at x4 each if the top two are used in dual graphics mode (note we didn't just say Crossfire as X38 like its older brother the 975X can do SLI just not officially).

ICY DOCK MB663UR-1S @ Bjorn3D

Quote

Did you ever have a laptop go bad and you forgot to backup the precious data? Professional data retrieval could cost a significant amount of dollars. A simpler solution would be to purchase a 2.5'' external/internal storage enclosure which would allow you to connect the hard drive to a desktop for data retrieval. For a retail price of approximately $20, it would be an invaluable investment when it comes to data rescue. Here at Bjorn3D, we have previously looked at ICY Dock's 2.5 IDE internal/external enclosure and today, we are going to take a look at ICY Dock's 2.5'' SATA internal/external enclosure.

Zaward Twin Towers Chipset Cooler @ techPowerUp

Quote

In the quest for silent performance, users are looking toward heatpipes for most of their cooling needs. Today we are looking at the new fanless chipset cooler from Zaward, called the Twin Towers. This chipset cooler has two heatpipes, one of which can rotate around the other to reduce compatibility issues. We put the Twin Towers to the test to see what kind of performance comes with its silence.

X.Org 7.3 Preview

"Scheduled for release tomorrow is X.Org 7.3. Among the new features for X.Org 7.3 include the Xorg server 1.4, an application for adjusting a display's backlight, updated display drivers, and support for font catalog directories. Version 1.4 of the X.Org server contains such features as RandR 1.2 support, input hot-plugging, KDrive enhancements, Solaris DTrace support, and EXA improvements. In this article today, we will briefly go over some of the changes found in X.Org 7.3 and we will follow up with some benchmarks in early September."

GECUBE's Dual GPU Gemini 3 - Sneak Peek!

Quote

Remember the Gemini 3 from GECUBE? If not, let us refresh your memory. The Gemini 3 is the second dual GPU card from GECUBE, the previous one was the Gemini 2 and it was based on a pair of Radeon X1650 XTs. The Gemini 3 features a pair of Radeon HD 2600 XT GPUs and they're clocked at 800MHz. Each GPU is paired with 256MB of 500MHz DDR2 memory (1GHz effectively). This might not sound like anything all too remarkable so far, but it seems like GECUBE will beat all the other AMD partners that are working on dual GPU cards, this by simply being the first to market. GECUBE is expecting the Gemini 3 to be available in retail some time next month, but we weren't given an exact launch date or a price for that matter.

Ultra Grid ATX Case Review Action - BCCHardware

Quote

This case is like a lot of other Mid-Towers on the market today, and does not offer a lot of room for oversized cards such as the 8800GTX, and when using a card like the 8800GTX your going to end up blocking a couple slots for hard drives, which isn't a problem for most 1-2 hard drive configurations, but if you plan on putting more than 2 in the case, you might be out of luck. . .

A Look Back At The AMD Athlon Processor Series @ Legit Reviews

Quote

Quote: "After going back five years and looking at the performance of the Athlon XP 1800+, it is amazing to see how far we have come in just five years. A good number of our readers still have Athlon XP systems in use and this article was a great opportunity to show them what they are missing out on as none of the major hardware review sites include these processor in updated performance charts any longer. The new Athlon 64 X2 6400+ processor is a welcomed addition to the Athlon series of processors, but it's sad knowing that this will likely be the last speed step for the Athlon series..."

Palit HD 2600 XT - Speed vs Memory

Quote

line up with each new release from AMD. The latest participants to the epic battle is the HD 2600 XT, coming standard with 256MB of GDDR3 memory Palit have taken it upon themselves to offer three models. There's the standard model which we don't really care about, because everyone knows that standard is boring. We then have the Sonic which is an overclocked 256MB GDDR3 card, and in the other corner we have the Super which comes in at stock clocks but carries with it 512MB of GDDR3 memory.

iOne Scorpius P20MT Wireless Keyboard Review @ ThinkComputers.org

Quote

"The iOne Scorpius P20MT 2.4GHz MCE Keyboard with Optical Trackball certainly lends a helping hand whenever it comes to using your HTPC. In today's world HTPCs are becoming more popular than ever. We are starting to see more companies emerge to help us enhance our home theatre environment. We have seen this from our previous review of the Scorpius N2T. The P20MT has some different features including the capability of easily recharging the device, a power button, and an even slimmer design. Let's take a further look to see what the Scorpius P20MT has to offer."

Sapphire Radeon HD 2400 XT + HD 2600 XT

Quote

"AMD have got their whole mid-range lineup well and truly going now and we had a look at Palit and their HD 2600 cards the other week; now it's time to have a look at the Sapphire HD 2600 XT and HD 2400 XT. The question is though, is it enough for us to recommend them over the 8600 series? Well at the time of writing about the Palit cards, almost! Since then a new driver set has come out in the form of the Catalyst 7.8 and some serious speed increases were seen for the mid-range cards. This could be enough for them to be the card of choice for users on a budget."

Toshiba R500 Notebook Review at XYZ Computing

Quote

The R500 received a lot of hype right from the start because of a few important distinctions. First of all, the R500 was (and still is) the slimmest notebook currently available with an optical drive. Its 7mm thick drive allows a total closed system height of just 0.77". Not long after the initial announcement the R500 made more headlines when different SKUs were announced, one of which (the R500-S5003) was called the world's lightest 12" notebook. At 1.7lbs for model with a 12.1" LCD (though no optical drive) this version of the R500 is obviously an incredible system, though its 64GB solid-state disk also helps to set it apart from the crowd. The R500 also touts the longest battery life of any 12.1" widescreen notebook, though this is something that we will look into more closely.

Swiftech MCW-60 @ Bjorn3D

Quote

Desperate times call for desperate measures. You may have heard this saying spoken throughout history and while those who have uttered these words may have been referring to periods of great struggle I am sure seeing the current state of video cards this quote applies here. As GPU's continue to hunger for more and more power they will continue to generate more and more heat. Gone are the days when a simple piece of metal would suffice. Even mid-range cards such as the 8800GTS require a dual-slot cooling solution to tame the beast within. What is an enthusiast to do? Sure you can get a nice large cooler if you can live with the noise it generates. What about water cooling? Ya know, that stuff you're NOT supposed to bring near expensive electronics. Before you decide me mad and click that little red 'X' what if I told you that you need not be so desperate to try water cooling. That a company with higher quality standards than most car manufacturers has a waterblock that destro! ys the competition and keeps your video card nice and chilly. With no more ado I give you the MCW-60 from Swiftech, a waterblock that delivers were it counts.

Steel Series SX Pro Gaming Mousepad Review @ Tweaknews.net

Quote

"In the end it comes down to one question: Are you prepared to pay for the best. At a hefty 49.95 Euro (US$70) this is not a product a casual user will be interested in. I personally would never spend that much on a mouse pad but I don't claim to be an avid gamer either. If you are looking for the best gaming pad money can buy, you've found it. If you are looking for good performance at an affordable price, keep looking."

Patent Troll Sues Online Companies Over Automated Emails

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 29, 2007 at 3:25:58 PM
I love how we grant patents to things that are obvious, even when they were filed. This patent company is suing many online companies over their use of automated response emails. I believe that vacation responders and the like have been around for much longer.

Quote

A more likely scenario appears to be a payday for the plaintiff. "It looks like Polaris IP is in the business of licensing patent rights and has no desire to enforce its requested injunction," said Dennis Crouch, associate professor of law at University of Missouri School of Law and the author of the law blog Patently-O, in an e-mail. "I expect that Polaris IP will be willing to settle these cases for what it believes is a reasonable six- or seven-digit figure." Crouch pointed out that the message routing patent at issue has been involved in litigation many times. "There are no published opinions associated with these cases and they have all been settled," he said. Polaris IP, Crouch observed, "appears to be part of a web of IP-related companies associated with attorney David Pridham." These companies include Orion IP, Constellation IP, IP Navigation Group, Cushion Technologies, CT IP Holdings, Triton, Circinus IP, and Firepond.

Solar Powered WiFi

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 27, 2007 at 3:24:47 PM
This is a good idea to use solar power for WiFi transmitters. Most public WiFi spots are out in the sun anyway.

Quote

Since solar energy can't be harvested all the time, the panel is actually far larger than would be necessary to simply power the router. In Florida, which gets about 4.5 hours of peak solar energy a day, Solis installs a 220-watt solar panel that measures about 4 feet by 5 feet. Ordinarily, a router only needs about 24 watts of power, he said. All that extra power goes to recharging the batteries, which run all night. The batteries in the system let the routers survive cloudy periods and can actually keep the router going for seven days without a recharge, Reynolds said.

At the very least, we all know that when the warning signs appear, what follows are a few very-important-sounding sentences noting the dire consequences of unauthorized use of what we're about to see. We don't necessarily understand it, but we know it's bad. And if we were to believe what they tell us, discussing Barry Bonds' homeruns around the water cooler would put us all in jail. Did it ever occur to you that, in many cases, these serious, ubiquitous warnings may not actually be accurate?

Printing also has had an overhaul, with a virtual "PDF printer" set up by default to allow any application to output into PDF format. The old printer management system has been replaced and a new configuration tool should mean that printers are set up just by plugging them in and turning them on, developers said. The Tribe 5 release also includes the latest version of the Gnome desktop, the public test version of what will become Gnome 2.20. Other additions scheduled for the final release include faster desktop search, fast user switching, a new deskbar applet and the AppArmor security framework, released as open-source software by Novell. The final release is scheduled for October 18.

In what was certainly predicted by everyone except Microsoft and Sony, the Wii has finally taken the lead away from the XBox 360 in worldwide sales.

Quote

Vgchartz.com, the most comprehensive Videogame charts in the world has announced that lifetime sales of Nintendo's Wii have passed Microsoft's Xbox 360 on a worldwide basis as of August 23rd. (*)

Two years ago, very few analysts would have predicted the Nintendo Wii would be market leader this generation against the established Playstation and Xbox brands. But analysts can be in error: Vgchartz.com data, which is based on sample data from retailers all over the world indicates that the week ending August 23rd Nintendo's Wii (which was released one year after the Xbox 360 in November 2006), currently standing at 10.57 million consoles sold, passed Xbox 360 lifetime sales of 10.51 million units, making Nintendo the new market leader in both the home and handheld videogame console businesses.

More Than Global Warming

Remember that the Earth revolves around the Sun. The Sun is a huge fusion reactor that spikes at points. These flairs can manifest their waves on the Earth with strange happenings.

Quote

Churning motions inside the Sun produce various kinds of waves, including sound waves called p-modes and another type of wave called g-modes. G-modes arise when pockets of material rising up from deep within the Sun get pulled downwards again by gravity, leading to a wave motion similar to the rise and fall of waves on the surface of the ocean. Both types of waves vibrate very slowly. The p-modes vibrate with periods of a few minutes, while the periods of g-modes are even longer, lasting tens of minutes or even several hours.

Offshore Or Automated?

Which would you rather have? A live person from another country or an automated system. I saw neither and give me people from my own country.

"The general upheld myth is that everyone wants to talk to an agent," Buckle said. "People are really changing their preferences when it comes to contacting organizations." According to the ITA survey, just more than a third of call center managers believe that all customers would rather speak to an agent than a speech recognition system. Around 29 percent say they have not used a speech recognition system solely because of the cost. However, 62 percent of call center managers agree that speech recognition systems offer a better customer experience than touch-tone self-service systems.

Attack Steals 1.6 Million Monster.com Accounts

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 22, 2007 at 3:09:43 PM
It seems that phishing works extremely well. 1.6 Million Monster.com accounts have been phished.

Quote

A computer program was used to access the employers' section of the website using stolen log-in credentials. Symantec said the log-ins were used to harvest user names, e-mail addresses, home addresses and phone numbers, which were uploaded to a remote web server. The stolen data could be used to send phishing and spam e-mails. "This remote server held over 1.6 million entries with personal information belonging to several hundred thousands of candidates, mainly based in the US, who had posted their resumes to the Monster.com website," reported Symantec.

Wikipedia Scanner uncovers scandals

Poster: Logan King
Posted on August 20, 2007 at 9:04:57 PM

Quote

One American student sent major corporations, governments and even the Vatican on the defensive after coming up with Wikipedia Scanner, a software program that reveals who changed Wikipedia entries.
Wikipedia.com is an online encyclopedia edited by general users, who write articles on every imaginable subject. Since it is written by users, anyone can edit, delete and arrange the articles on Wikipedia.
What Virgil Griffith did was come up with a program that reveals who edits these articles, via a system where it scans the I.P address and cross-references it with the I.P. directory.

As soon as the software was launched on the internet, chaos erupted.

Linky.

Most of the list is all to predictable, but one of particular comedy I found was this one:

Quote

- BBC changes Blair's drink from coffee to vodka and his workout from the gym to the bedroom. Someone from the BBC also changes Bush’s page, changing the name from ”George Walker Bush” to “George Wan*** Bush”

Anyways, I guess that kind of implodes any credibility Wikipedia had as a reliable source of info.

Space Shuttle Undocks Early

Shuttle Endeavor has undocked from the ISS. It was for fear of hurricane Dean.

Quote

If the storm shifted toward Houston, NASA would evacuate the space centre, which oversees the shuttle during flight, and set up an emergency command post at KSC in Florida. Endeavor is scheduled to touch down in Florida at 1232 EDT (1632 GMT) on Tuesday, but the back-up landing site at Edwards Air Force Base in California will be available if needed, Shannon said.

700MHz Spectrum Still Up In The Air

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 16, 2007 at 2:05:13 PM
Why are we debating releasing this spectrum back to the people? I'm sick of companies buying all the airwaves because of an old and useless organization (The FCC). The spectrum should be open.

Quote

Today, both the 700MHz and white-space frequencies are used to deliver analog TV service. But when broadcasters transition to digital TV service in 2009, the 700MHz spectrum, which includes broadcast channels 52 to 69, will be auctioned off. And spectrum between channels 2 to 52 will essentially lay fallow. Public policy experts see this transition to digital as a perfect opportunity to make spectrum available for new players who want to compete in the broadband market. On their own, these slivers of wireless spectrum are not sufficient to provide enough capacity for companies to build wireless broadband services that truly compete against high-bandwidth services offered by the cable and phone companies. But combined with other pieces of spectrum, like Wi-Fi, this spectrum could provide enough capacity to deliver competitive services.

SEGA announces their future. Shows once again how oblivious they are to everything after 1994.

Poster: Logan King

Quote

Jeffery is looking beyond Sonic, which he says is "an amazing recruitment vehicle" for younger gamers but "loses its cool factor when you get about 12 years old." To compensate, Sega has focused on developing games for more mature audiences. In one of its most violent games, Condemned: Criminal Origins, players solve a series of grisly murders while engaging in bloody hand-to-hand combat. A sequel is due out this holiday season.

Billy Pidgeon, a program manager for the market intelligence firm IDC, says Sega is taking the right approach by not relying on just one or two potential blockbuster games. "You have to have a diversified portfolio right now," he says. "You can only get so much mileage out of Sonic and company."

Linky.

Though many more have covered this much better, I will say that Sonic stopped being cool to kids over 12 when the games started being garbage. Or 2003, for those who aren't in the know. The reason they have the "little kids stigma" is that little kids are usually the only ones who can live with the poor quality everything in the series has had to offer as late. And slapping violence on games that are pure shit won't sell games anymore either, so SEGA is up a creek unless they figure that out as well.

Cellulosic Ethanol Is The Future

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 14, 2007 at 2:02:00 PM
The USA is stupid for using corn-based ethanol for fuels. Cellulosic-based ethanol can use nearly any plant by-product for ethanol production. This mean that food prices won't increase because of fuel. And don't get me started on how wasteful getting ethanol from corn is.

Quote

Making ethanol from forestry or agricultural waste does not involve the same intensive farming as corn, which requires more water and labor, cellulosic ethanol proponents say. Also, in the ongoing food-versus-fuel debate, cellulosic ethanol advocates say that forests don't compete for land with food crops. The Soperton, Ga., plant will be using wood cast away by loggers. Trees are hauled to a central point where their tops and branches are cut off, providing the material for Range Fuels' multi-step thermochemical process. Tree branches will go into a large tank where enough heat and pressure are applied to the mix to turn it into a gas. That synthetic gas is treated and then passed through a chemical catalyst which converts the gas to alcohol. Finally, the alcohol gas is converted to fuels and then turned into liquid.

New Service Pack For XP

And it only gives new activation keys for the older operating system. Think it is a bit weird that Microsoft wants more copies of this instead of Vista? Not at all. Vista sucks.

Quote

Microsoft has had to create a new build of Windows XP Professional for computer makers because the six-year-old operating system's continued popularity has nearly exhausted the supply of product activation keys. The new build, dubbed SP2c, includes no fixes or feature changes, but was created simply to address the shrinking pool of product keys. XP Pro SP2c, which has been released to manufacturing, will be made available to OEMs and system builders next month, said Microsoft.

Endeavour May Need Repair

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 13, 2007 at 2:39:24 PM
Endeavour has a gouge from takeoff that MAY need repair. They aren't bailing out so don't freak out.

Quote

Shuttle astronauts used a robot arm to scan the damage with a laser that provided a three-dimensional view showing that the 8-centimetre (3-inch) gash penetrated all the way through the thin tiles that protect the shuttle from heat as it flies through the atmosphere before landing. Mission management team chairman John Shannon said NASA needed to do more tests before making a decision to repair the damage, caused by a chunk of foam that fell off the shuttle's fuel tank about a minute after lift-off on Wednesday from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, US.

Schedules Direct $15/3 Months For MythTV

Poster: Aron Schatz

The company that was founded in the wake of Data Direct's demise will charge $15 for 3 months of service. It is also non-recurring. They hope to lower the cost to $20 for a year soon.

Quote

The answer to everyone's top question is.... $15 / 3 months non-recurring.

That's too much money!
Sorry... until we have some idea as to the subscriber count we need to make sure we can pay the bills. We expect pricing to drop by the end of the initial term. Our goal is $20/year.

Breathe Into This: You Have Cancer!

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 9, 2007 at 4:01:11 PM
Scientists made a breathalyzer that can detect certain diseases. The device can be used for a quick diagnosis, but shouldn't be used to make a 100% claim.

Quote

According to the device's maker, Menssana Research, the BCA has been able to detect breast cancer with the same accuracy as a mammogram. And initial findings have shown that the BCA detects pulmonary tuberculosis. As a cheap, rapid alternative to modern-day sputum testing, the device could have a huge impact in TB-ravaged developing countries. The BCA can also supposedly detect lung cancer, certain kind of heart disease and diabetes. And it's been approved by the FDA for clinical use in detecting heart transplant rejection. All of which sounds suspiciously miraculous, but with funding from both DARPA and the U.S. National Institute of Health, the BCA will continue to be tested at universities and hospitals in the U.S. and abroad.

Apple Releases the new iMacs

Poster: Rich
Posted on August 8, 2007 at 3:23:18 PM
Apple has released its new line of iMac computers. The new design spec is made of aluminum and glass. Besides being absolutely gorgeous, they also come with some better standard specs. The pricing starts at $1,199.00 for a 20" version. I guess Apple decided to do away with the 17" altogether. I would love to get my hands on one of these, but I will wait until the new version of OSX is released in October. Apple continues not only to lead with software innovation, but also in design innovation of all of its products. Clearly, they understand the difference between a good computer and a perfect peice of hardware.
I'm going to now go ahead and plug my own article about design innovation in tech products: »http://www.aselabs.com/articles.php?id=210

See the new iMac: http://www.apple.com/imac/

Dell And Ubuntu Released To More

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 8, 2007 at 3:22:20 PM
More countries can now buy Ubuntu on Dell machines preloaded. This is really good for the Linux community.

Quote

Similar to what we've done in the United States, we will configure and install open source drivers for hardware, when possible for these new products. See John Hull's Technical Details post for a more detailed explanation. Recently, some IdeaStorm readers asked why we discontinued the Inspiron E1505N in the United States. The answer is that we transitioned to the Inspiron 1420N, which is a product that we do not offer in the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
