Hollywood star-power boosts viewership to website's red carpet coverage

LOS ANGELES, March 9 -- Webcastr.com, a two-year-old professional video web network, found a new global audience Sunday when it began its first ever live stream from the famed red carpet ceremonies at the 82nd annual Academy Awards in Hollywood.

The Los Angeles-based site was among a handful of sites streaming the two-hour telecast in association with AP and Livestream which provided the feed for the web.

"It was the first time we attempted live video streaming," said Webcastr CEO Tim Devine, "and the results were spectacular." As the Hollywood superstars each entered the red carpet area, Webcastr provided viewers with both live coverage as well as Facebook and Twitter updates capturing the event in real time.

"Each time a George Clooney or Sandra Bullock appeared on the telecast, our viewership went up in line with the conversations happening across a variety of social platforms," said Devine. "It was truly the beginning of a new level of interactive experience for both us and our viewers around the world."

Unlike most video-sharing sites, Webcastr broadcasts professional and semi-pro content from dozens of providers like AP, Reuters, Fox Sports, the Wall Street Journal, TV Guide Broadband, US Weekly, Splash News, Sony Music, Warner Music, Revision3 and many others while avoiding all but the very best user-generated content. Webcastr's mission is to deliver the best quality viewer experience, thereby bypassing the often times questionable content associated with many UGC sites.

"We are often compared to an independent Hulu," says Devine, referring to the network's content mix, "but while they focus on entertainment, we lean towards news and lifestyle programming."

Vote Paves the Way for FiOS TV - the Ultimate Home Upgrade for TV Service Delivered Over the Nation's Most Advanced All-Fiber-Optic Network

MILLIS, Mass., March 9 -- Residents of Millis are a major step closer to having a real choice for their cable television services, thanks to a newly approved agreement authorizing Verizon to offer its FiOS TV service via the most advanced all-digital, fiber-optic network straight to customers' homes.

The Millis Board of Selectmen on Monday (March 8) granted a cable franchise to Verizon, authorizing video choice for thousands of households here.

The board's authorization brings to 106 the total number of Massachusetts communities where Verizon's FiOS TV is or will soon be available.

"We are thrilled to bring FiOS TV, an outstanding alternative for video entertainment, to residents in Millis," said Donna Cupelo, Verizon region president for New England.  "Since the launch of FiOS TV in Massachusetts, we are continuing our efforts to meet the consumer demand for cable TV choice."

FiOS TV is the company's advanced fiber-optic television service, with superior picture-and-sound quality, innovative and interactive features, more high-definition and on-demand programs than cable, and more reliable service at competitive prices.

"As a result of this new franchise, consumers in Millis will be able to choose their cable provider as easily as they choose their phone company," said Cupelo. "Competition drives innovation, value and service quality, and it puts the consumer in control."

Verizon's license agreement with the city of Millis is for 10 years.  The agreement contains provisions for the network's future growth; financial support and capacity for educational and government access channels; cable service to government buildings; and other important benefits to the city, including insurance, indemnification and enforcement protections.

"Verizon will compete aggressively for subscribers in Millis with our FiOS services, which are fueled by our lightning-fast fiber-optic network," Cupelo said. Verizon soon will begin its door-to-door sales campaign in Millis, explaining the many advantages of FiOS TV to local consumers.

Verizon is the first company to offer a fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network, connecting homes and businesses directly to fiber optics on a widespread scale.

    Continued improvement in gross margin, reaching 73% in 2009

    2009 was a year marked by strong growth with sales increasing
by 35% (+38% at constant exchange rates) to EUR29.3 million, in accordance
with the company's growth strategy.

    Revenue growth was accompanied by an improvement in gross
margin which reached 73% of revenues (71% in 2008), driven by the pooling of
IT resources and economies of scale from its SaaS platform. This is the
fourth consecutive year that gross margin has improved significantly.

    Bookings growth led to an increase in backlog of 55%, reaching
EUR39.3 million compared to EUR25.4 million in 2008, providing strong
visibility into Emailvision's future revenues. Of the total backlog as at
December 2009, EUR17.9 million will be recognized in 2010 and EUR11.1 million
in 2011.

    Sales growth acceleration impacted profitability, as expected

    During 2009, Emailvision intensified its strategy of market
share growth in Europe and in the USA with the opening of two new
subsidiaries (Sweden and Italy) and an increase in headcount (67 new staff
recruited in 2009, representing an increase of 45%). By end 2009, the group
had subsidiaries in 10 countries. Emailvision won more than 900 new clients
during the year.

    As previously announced, investments in people, mainly in the
sales team (56 sales staff present at the end of 2009 compared to 36 at the
end of 2008) and the R&D team, temporarily impacted the company's
profitability.

    Adoption of IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards)

    Starting in 2009, and as part of the process of transferring
to Euronext, Emailvision has decided to present its accounts in IAS/IFRS
format.

    The effect on the profit and loss account of adopting IFRS
mainly concerns the inclusion of a charge for stock options & warrants
granted to staff and managers. These changes, which negatively impact the
EBIT by EUR0.79 million, have no cash impact for the Group.

    The EBIT for 2009 is EUR0.73 million (2.53% of revenues)
compared to EUR1.89 million in 2008 (restated for the adoption of IFRS).
Adjusting for the impact of stock option and warrant charges, EBIT for the
year was EUR1.52 million (5.2% of revenues), representing a decrease of 27%
compared to 2008.

    Adjusted net income for the year was EUR1.24 million,
increasing by 18% compared to 2008, due to low corporation tax rate. The good

CARY, N.C., March 9 -- Following the recent announcement of Icarus Studios' development of a Fallen Earth mobile companion iPhone application, Icarus Studios, co-developer of Fallen Earth, the critically-acclaimed MMORPG, has teamed up with technology start-up AFK Interactive to extend the Fallen Earth mobile companion application to the Blackberry, Android, Brew, and Java platforms, set to be released in Q2.

The mobile companion application, described by early reviewers as "game changing," allows Fallen Earth players in-game and real-time access to several key features of the MMOG from their mobile phone. Similar to the upcoming iPhone application, the app will enable players on other mobile devices to log in to the live Fallen Earth server and interact with their character(s) and other players via several different modules such as Chat, Crafting and the Auction House.

Frequency ranges include 134-174 MHz, 400 - 470 MHz and 450 - 512 MHz.

The series will include a full keypad (16 key) and four-key models, both with 8-character alphanumeric display and 512 and 256 channel capacity respectively and a non-display option.

As with all Vertex Standard radios, the new VX-450 Series is backed with a full 3-year warranty in North America. Future additions planned based on this new platform include LTR/Passport trunking models to be announced later in 2010.

Corrupt Politicians Want National ID Card

As if it wasn't bad enough already, Schumer (the schmuck from NY-D) and Graham (the moron from SC-R) want to add in a national ID card to an immigration bill. This is how it starts, people! We have never, ever, been a nation of "let me see your papers" and this just flies in the face of that.

Schumer and Graham are both progressives, regardless of the party you see them in. Instead of fixing the problem (like not having wide open borders so illegal aliens come in), they try to put a bandage on it by throwing more government at the problem.

Do you honestly think that this ID card will stop at workers? There aren't many times I agree with the ACLU, but this is one of them. It is completely un-American and I hope the voters in NY and SC get rid of these two losers.

Mr. Schumer said employers would be able to buy a scanner to check the IDs for as much as $800. Small employers, he said, could take their applicants to a government office to like the Department of Motor Vehicles and have their hands scanned there.


See. Now the government is in control of all the jobs in the private economy. That doesn't sound like a free market to me. Don't get me wrong, I don't want American jobs going to illegal aliens, period. Fix the problem, not the symptom.

NEW YORK, March 9 -- Verizon is making it easier than ever for consumers to use the company's new In-Home Agent self-help platform, thanks to a new interactive tool called an iKyp webkey.

The webkey, developed by marketing specialist firm Kyp, is a patented auto-launch technology that, when plugged into the USB port of a computer or laptop, instantly opens the In-Home Agent download page at http://www.verizon.com/inhomeagent and starts the download.  One click on the agent completes the setup, and the application is ready for use.

The In-Home Agent self-help tool truly puts the customer in control. The application is easy, fast and effective, and it simplifies the customer experience by putting the equivalent of a support agent in the customer's home.

"We want to get as many of our customers as possible to use the self-help tool so they can take advantage of the benefits it provides," said Gary Butler, vice president of regional operations for Verizon.  "The iKyp webkey helps us do that by making it very easy for customers to go directly to the download site and get the application."

Verizon's In-Home Agent is an automated tool that can eliminate the need to call an agent for help by enabling Verizon customers to perform a variety of functions with the click of a mouse.  A video version for FiOS TV puts help and information tools right on the TV screen and is controlled by the TV's remote.  With the agent, Verizon FiOS Internet and FiOS TV customers can check and restore their Internet service, repair their video setup, establish security for their computer's Wi-Fi connection and perform various e-mail and voice mail functions.  The agent also supports some self-help functions for Verizon High Speed Internet customers.

Verizon is using iKyp webkeys as part of an initial trial to promote customer interest in the In-Home Agent.  The program has already generated a 10 percent response rate -- significantly higher than the direct-marketing industry average -- in the first two weeks since the iKyp webkeys were mailed to customers. Based on Kyp's experience with similar iKyp webkey campaigns, Kyp said Verizon should expect to see the response rate climb over the next three to four months.

"When we created the Verizon iKyp webkey, we wanted to build an interactive direct mail solution that empowered customers to enhance their service experiences," said Nicholas Miller, chief executive officer for Kyp.  "Our unique iKyp webkey application makes it easy for a person to digest the offline information they need to get started, and seamlessly download the In-Home Agent desktop tool.  By changing the way customers are engaged with information, the iKyp webkey has allowed Verizon to eclipse the response rate the Direct Marketing Association has reported as the industry's average."

The In-Home Agent is part of an ongoing effort by Verizon to give customers the opportunity to self-manage their services online, on the TV screen or on the phone, without the help of an agent.  The FiOS home network is connected directly via a managed service data link to Verizon's back office systems, which allows the In-Home Agent to resolve issues using two-way communication between equipment in the home and at Verizon.

Single-chip controller IC for optical joysticks/optical-finger-navigation modules enables improved mobile experience and longer battery life

GENEVA, March 9 -- STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a leading developer of semiconductors for mobile devices, has introduced an ultra-low-power IC containing all the functions necessary to control an Optical Finger Navigation (OFN) module or optical joystick. The VD5376 optical joystick controller helps users interact with the increasingly sophisticated features of portable electronic products, such as smartphones, laptop PCs, netbooks, media players, GPS devices and remote controls for home-entertainment equipment. The new VD5376 controller chip has been designed into new smartphones by leading mobile phone manufacturers and is being evaluated by major PC companies for use in portable computing devices and by TV and set-top-box makers for remote controllers.

An optical joystick, or OFN module, enables mobile users to enjoy increased accuracy and flexibility of a desktop-PC mouse while allowing consumer manufacturers to save space with the integration of this smallest of user interfaces, in contrast to other technologies, such as touchscreens, that are often not accurate enough for emerging mobile applications. Actions such as pinpointing map locations, selecting hyperlinks on web pages, or adjusting playback volume using a touch-sensitive slider can be difficult or imprecise when using touch control directly on-screen. Another alternative, touchpads, are significantly larger than OFN modules and do not operate as efficiently when moisture is present or the user is wearing gloves. Still other devices, such as trackballs or buttons, are even less suited for small handheld products.

Using an OFN module to control an on-screen cursor helps next-generation products overcome these limitations. The module is embedded in the outer casing, and incorporates a light source similar to that of a desktop optical mouse. When the user moves a fingertip over the surface of the module, the VD5376 controller IC measures the tiny movements to produce a corresponding change in cursor position on the screen.

ST's VD5376 contains all the features necessary to manage an OFN module, and is supplied as a bare die that can be easily incorporated into next-generation modules delivering the high performance and power efficiency demanded by today's handheld markets. Features include a highly sensitive and reliable imaging array for detecting finger movement, as well as driver circuitry for the light source. This chip is compatible with laser, infrared or optical LEDs, thereby maximizing flexibility for module builders. In addition, advanced power-management capabilities contribute to the device's low overall power consumption, ultimately resulting in longer battery life for end products.

Designed for Ikan Technologies, Inc. of Stamford, Conn., (http://www.ikan.net) the Ikan is a 7" WI-FI based touch screen tablet running Google's Android operating system embedded with a high speed scanner that is revolutionizing in-home grocery shopping.

The Ikan is a wireless appliance which resides in the kitchen and automatically builds a shopping list from items scanned and messages recorded into the device before items are disposed of. Scanned and recorded items are simultaneously sent to the user's Ikan and mobile phone or directly to an online grocery retailer's shopping cart.

According to Sawhney, the Ikan provides the link between the kitchen and the consumer on the go. "The same shopping list you see on your Ikan is the same shopping list you see on your Smartphone," said Sawhney. The Ikan can even include your own branded retailer application allowing customers to view specials, featured recipe, promotions, etc. right from their kitchen or Smartphone.

Chevrolet to Evaluate Emerging Social Media Technologies at South by Southwest

Chevrolet to learn about the best practices for connecting with customers in a digital age

DETROIT, March 9 -- On March 12, Chevrolet will launch three social-media applications at South by Southwest, as a pilot test of emerging technologies that will help Chevrolet connect with consumers. During the interactive, music and film conferences and festivals, Chevrolet will have an opportunity to introduce more than 185,000 attendees to products like the Camaro, Volt, and Cruze. As one of the preeminent interactive conferences, South by Southwest also provides an opportunity for Chevrolet to learn what attendees feel are the best practices and emerging technologies in social media.

"Social media is a powerful tool in a digital world where people can get news instantly on their smart phone, watch television shows on streaming video, and communicate with friends on social-networking sites," says Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager. "For Chevrolet, South by Southwest provides an invaluable opportunity to learn how best to communicate with customers in by leveraging these technologies."

Accordingly, Chevrolet will focus on integrating technologies and events at South by Southwest, creating opportunities to talk with, and learn from, attendees.

Evaluating Emerging Technologies

Chevrolet will evaluate three emerging technologies during the conference, including location-based social networking, quick response codes, and augmented reality.

  --  For location-based social networking, Chevrolet has partnered with
      Austin-based Gowalla. From their smart phones, Gowalla users can
      "check in" to let friends and followers know where they are at a given
      moment. Gowalla users in Austin will receive a welcome message from
      Chevrolet, while a select number will receive icons redeemable for
      transportation in a dedicated fleet of Chevrolet vehicles, or
      information at Chevrolet lounges around the city.

  --  Chevrolet will use Quick Response (QR) codes to introduce attendees to
      the key features of vehicles including the Camaro, Volt, and Cruze.
      When photographed using a camera phone, the QR codes will launch a
      dedicated microsite with key features of the vehicle. For example, a
      QR code on the hood will take attendees to a micro-site to learn more
      about the 1.4-liter Ecotec turbocharged engine in the Cruze, which is
      expected to deliver class-leading 40 miles per gallon.

  --  For augmented reality, Chevrolet is one of the first automotive
      companies to use the emerging technology in a mobile application.
      Users who download the Chevrolet iReveal application, available in
      Beta form, will be able to unlock three-dimensional models of
      Chevrolet vehicles. The application will provide key specifics of the
      vehicles, and insert the virtual image of the car over the actual
      streetscape viewed through the smart phone camera lens.

"The potential of these technologies is incredible," says Christopher Barger, Director of Global Communications and Technology for GM. "Imagine using Quick Response Codes to download the price and options for a vehicle on a dealer lot right to your cell phone. Or, imagine using augmented reality to virtually preview different colors of the Camaro in your own driveway. We are just scratching the surface of what's possible with mobile technologies and social media applications."

South by Southwest Activities

In addition, Chevrolet will offer a number of opportunities to meet, and learn from, South by Southwest attendees.

  --  Chevrolet is providing vehicles for eight teams participating in a
      road rally dubbed the "See the USA in your Chevrolet: A SXSW Road
      Trip." Teams will drive to Austin from as far away as New York City
      and San Diego, competing to complete missions selected by followers on
      Twitter. The teams will use technologies ranging from OnStar to
      Facebook to track and report their progress in the race, in real time.

  --  As part of multiple, interactive Chevrolet displays in Austin, the
      Chevrolet Volt Recharging Station will help South by Southwest
      attendees to stay connected, with  more than 100 electrical ports for
      recharging their cell phones, net books, and cameras.

  --  Chevrolet will also make a fleet of vehicles, including Camaro,
      Equinox, Malibu, and Traverse, available for conference attendees.
      Chevrolets will provide transportation to and from the highest
      trafficked locations in downtown Austin. In addition, Chevrolet will
      offer rides to exclusive events, such as a drive to Salt Lick BBQ, a
      South by Southwest institution outside of Austin.
