Sonics Introduces Semiconductor IP Industry's First Power Management Solution Combining Fine-Grain Partitioning And Autonomous Control
ICE-Grain(TM) Power Architecture Saves More Energy Than Conventional Approaches for Mainstream SoC Designs
MILPITAS, Calif., May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonics, Inc., the world's foremost supplier of on-chip network (NoC) technologies and services, today introduced the ICE-Grain (Instant Control of Energy) Power Architecture for system-on-chip (SoC) design teams that require an automated power management solution with "worry-free implementation" at the highest level of abstraction. Sonics' ICE-Grain Power Architecture is the semiconductor IP industry's first and only complete power management sub-system comprised of configurable hardware IP blocks, embedded control software, and integrated design tool environment.
With the ICE-Grain Power Architecture, SoC designers partition their chips into much finer "grains," which enables up to 10x faster and more precise power control. Power "grains" are very small sections of an SoC that include functional logic that can be individually power controlled using one or more savings methods. A grain is connected to one or more clock domains and attached to at least one power domain, and includes defined signals and conditions for power control. Grains are often an order of magnitude smaller than conventionally independent power or clocking domains, and multiple grains can be composed into larger hierarchical grains. The ICE-Grain Power Architecture automates the tasks of grain connection and management by synthesizing both central and local control circuitry blocks for the greatest total SoC power reduction.
Sonics is targeting the ICE-Grain Power Architecture to mainstream SoC design teams creating energy-sensitive applications in consumer, IoT, mobile, wearables, automotive, and set-top box markets. These teams typically lack the engineering resources or time necessary to develop sophisticated, highly responsive, fine-grain power management schemes. Their resulting chips often consume more energy than necessary and sometimes significantly more than the design specification allows.
For mainstream SoC design teams, the ICE-Grain Power Architecture is an automated solution providing the most advanced capabilities and benefits of sophisticated power management schemes to address critical trends such as:
1. The number of clocking, power and voltage domains that require
independent control is increasing;
2. The number of power events that need to be processed is increasing
dramatically. These events must be managed at run-time to satisfy power
constraints;
3. Power and energy budgets are tightening and becoming more challenging,
including thermal, battery, and regulatory limits.
"Sonics is keenly aware of the power problem in today's designs from our long history integrating battery-powered SoCs with on-chip networks and from our recent power research and patent work," said Drew Wingard, CTO of Sonics. "Our goal with the ICE-Grain Power Architecture is to give system architects the IP, drivers, and automation tools they need to address power reduction early in the SoC design process where it proves most effective. To save power, designers must power-down parts of the SoC as quickly as possible to eliminate leakage current, and then power the parts back up just in time. Our fine-grain approach controls power in hardware for much faster switching between states. This approach also implements dynamic voltage and frequency scaling to take advantage of the high dependence of active power on voltage."
Saves More Power Than Conventional Power Management Approaches
Compared to conventional, software-controlled approaches, Sonics' fine-grain technique provides many more opportunities to turn parts of the chip to low-power states. Its hardware-controlled state transitions enable the architecture to optimize the power state to match the operating conditions of the controlled grain. This allows SoC designers to exploit many more "dark silicon" states than they can typically achieve using software-controlled approaches.
Key ICE-Grain Power Architecture features and benefits are:
1) The first commercial technology to manage and control all common power techniques in a unified environment.
-- Hardware identification of power saving opportunities
-- Unique "wake on demand" technique allows automated grain shut down and
instantaneous wake up when needed
-- Hardware control of clock, isolation, retention, and power gating
sequences
-- Hardware control of operating points for DVFS (dynamic voltage and
frequency scaling) and AVS (adaptive voltage scaling)
-- Leverages existing software-controlled power management techniques
2) Scalable, distributed, and modular architecture.
-- Centralized grain controller block manages individual and inter-grain
power sequencing and operating point assignment
-- Distributed, local controller blocks per grain handle power sequence
execution and minimize the logic in the always on domain
-- Hardware event control system supports hundreds of grains with
predictable, low latency and virtually no impact on processor
performance
3) Easy, worry-free implementation of hardware control and fine-grain power reduction.
-- Scales to support hundreds of power grains that are
correct-by-construction and include on-chip debug and monitoring
-- Minimal area and power impact to the original design
4) EDA tool support complies with industry-standard tools, flows, and formats.
5) Complete, integrated solution; no special power expertise required.
-- With the ICE-Grain Power Architecture, designers work at the highest
level of abstraction, which means they do not have to be power
management experts to adopt and use the solution.
-- Leverages existing power management techniques where designers can
integrate some or all of their existing software-based approach
"We have followed Sonics for many years and can confirm that the company has been exposed to power issues in more than 250 chip designs," said Rich Wawryzniak, Senior Market Analyst: ASIC & SoC, Semico Research Corp. "They have applied that body of knowledge and years of power reduction development work in their on-chip network products and are now focused on solving the power problem for the broader SoC market place. There is a large market opportunity for an IP supplier that delivers a commercial solution on par with the most advanced power schemes developed by the "army of experts" at large system companies like Apple. We believe there is strong pent-up demand for an automated power management solution with chip design teams building mainstream products in more modest volumes than Apple. Sonics is well-positioned to take advantage of this opportunity."
Availability
Sonics is currently engaging with a limited number of early access technology partners who are interested in using the ICE-Grain Power Architecture for SoC design projects in 2015. Partners can implement the ICE-Grain Power Architecture independently of Sonics' on-chip networks; however, there are strong synergies when they are used together. Sonics plans product announcements related to the ICE-Grain Power Architecture in late 2015.

New Touchjet Pond(TM) Projector Turns Any Wall, Ceiling or Floor into an Interactive Touchscreen
Touchjet Also Offers Sneak Peek of New Product that Turns Almost any Flat Screen into a Touchscreen Smart TV
SAN FRANCISCO, May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, on the heels of one of the most successful Indiegogo crowd-funding campaigns of all time, Touchjet launched the Touchjet Pond(TM) Projector. It's the first consumer device that turns any flat surface into a super-sized touchscreen. A device that fits in the palm of your hand, the Touchjet Pond Projector is ultra-portable and can easily fit in a briefcase, backpack or purse. With the projector, users can interact directly with their photos, videos, games, apps and presentations on a large touch display (up to 80") anywhere they go.
Built on the Android 4.4 operating system, the projector gives users access to hundreds of thousands of apps that can be downloaded directly to the device via Google Play. Users can also directly project from almost any smartphone or tablet using a third-party app. The unique design and infrared (IR) technology brings any Android app to life with an interactive screen that users control with a stylus.
In addition, Touchjet previewed the Touchjet WAVE(TM), the second product to leverage Touchjet's proprietary touch technology. The Touchjet WAVE turns almost any flat screen TV or monitor into a touchscreen Smart TV (up to 60") and features a compact, unobtrusive design with easy setup. It will launch on Indiegogo next month and will be widely available later in the year. For more information on discount rates and early access, visit the website here: http://www.touchjet.com.
"Mobile devices do a great job of keeping people connected, except when they are in the same room," said Helen Thomas, CEO of Touchjet and former SVP of Worldwide Sales at Livescribe and GM of APAC International Business at LeapFrog. "We're creating devices that take the interactivity of mobile apps and project it so everyone can share the experience, be it in the living room, classroom or a board room."
College classmates Tom Li Jiang, president, and Liu Zhen, CTO, recognized that mobile devices were isolating people, as families, friends and colleagues spent more and more time "together" staring at separate screens. It's a concern shared by families as well. A recent survey showed that 71 percent of moms feel they are losing their kids to digital screens(([1])). Tom and Liu founded Touchjet and developed the Touchjet Pond Projector and the Touchjet WAVE to change how consumers interact with their devices and each other, opening the door for shared experiences.
The unique technology that powers the Touchjet Pond Projector starts with the light processing unit (LPU). Positioned near the lens of the projector, the LPU picks up an infrared signal which then runs through an image-processing algorithm. That process translates the location of the user's gesture into a standard touch point signal. The Touchjet algorithm must process thousands of points and dozens of projected frames per second in order to deliver the seamless interactive experience. The same infrared technology is applied in a similar fashion to the Touchjet WAVE.
The Touchjet Pond Projector can be set up in moments and is easy to use. Just turn on the projector, download the apps and start to interact with the content on the surface. Users can instantly play games, edit documents in real time or watch videos, all in one place. The options are endless:
-- At home: Bring family and friends together to play games, watch movies,
share pictures and more. With the ability to use two styli at once,
friends and family can join in on the fun, too. The projector can also
replace other home media options -- the 80" screen and functionality of
Android apps make it a complete entertainment package that costs less
than buying a similar-size TV and gaming console for the home.
-- In schools: Create an interactive classroom with Touchjet's built-in
Android system. With access to hundreds of educational apps covering an
array of topics from learning how to read to recognizing colors and
shapes, Touchjet brings an interactive lesson plan to groups of students
that counter balances individual tablets and Chromebooks that are taking
over the classroom.
-- On the go: Whether traveling for work or for pleasure, the projector's
portability is a real asset. Weighing in at 9.6 ounces and equipped with
a built-in speaker, the Touchjet Pond Projector is ideal for giving
presentations, watching movies in a hotel room (or anywhere), chatting
with loved ones or playing games.
The Touchjet Pond Projector's price starts at $599 and includes:
-- 1 Touchjet Pond Projector with a built-in computer pre-loaded with
Android apps, the Android operating system and 18 GB of user-addressable
memory
-- 1 Power Supply (5vdc, 3A)
-- 1 Battery
-- 2 Styli
-- 1 Airmouse
-- 1 USB (OTG) cable for PC hookup or accessories
-- 1 User Guide
-- 6 AAA Batteries (for the two styli and Airmouse)
-- 1 Carrying Case
The Touchjet Pond Projector can be purchased via http://www.touchjet.com.
About Touchjet:
Founded in 2013, Touchjet brings people together in shared experiences using its patented touch technology. The company's first product, the Touchjet Pond Projector (formerly called Touchpico), turns any surface into a giant touchscreen. The Touchjet Pond Projector had one of the most successful Indiegogo campaigns ever, securing more than $800,000 in funding. With offices in both Singapore and the United States, Touchjet has a global team of top engineers and designers who are continuing to develop innovative applications for the company's touch technology.

New Barracuda Load Balancer FDC Delivers High Performance per Dollar with 40 Gbps Throughput at Industry Disruptive Price
Barracuda Load Balancer FDC Provides Customers High Throughput Load Balancing Optimized for Virtualized Data Centers
CAMPBELL, Calif., May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Barracuda Networks, Inc. (NYSE: CUDA)
Press Release Highlights:
-- New Barracuda Load Balancer Fast Distribution Controller (FDC) delivers
high performance per dollar with 40 Gbps throughput at an industry
disruptive price.
-- Barracuda Load Balancer FDC efficiently scales performance to handle
large volumes of client requests in modern Application Delivery
Networks.
-- Barracuda Load Balancer FDC leverages the Data Plane Development Kit
(DPDK) and Intel® architecture to consolidate workloads, boost
performance, and reduce total cost of ownership while delivering high
throughput load balancing in virtualized data centers.
Barracuda has extended its Load Balancer product family with the new Barracuda Load Balancer FDC model T740. Built on Intel architecture and featuring improved packet processing performance by up to ten times, Barracuda Load Balancer FDC delivers high 40 Gbps throughput at an industry disruptive price. Designed for virtualized data centers, Barracuda Load Balancer FDC provides scalability and high availability for websites and cloud services. It monitors the health of servers and evenly distributes server loads - all while maintaining session persistence and a seamless user experience in the event that one or more servers become overburdened or unresponsive.
"Users and applications are becoming increasingly dispersed and creating new traffic patterns that are forcing organizations to reexamine their application delivery approach. The next-generation data center needs fast and effective load balancing of server traffic at the physical layer, where it can be handled more efficiently before it enters the application virtualization layer," said Stephen Pao, GM Security, Barracuda. "The Barracuda Load Balancer FDC addresses these needs with high throughput load balancing, leveraging standard Intel® Architecture Processors, to provide customers with a combination of high performance and cost efficiency that is disruptive in the industry."
According to Gartner, "Traditional applications supported a model that placed the data center at the center of traffic flows. All application access was via the data center, which made it easy to insert security and application delivery capabilities between the client and their applications. New application architectures are changing network traffic patterns, taking the ADCs, front-end optimizers and WOCs out of the data flow, forcing infrastructure architects to rethink their application delivery strategy." Gartner recommends organizations should, "Move from a model of physical devices allocated to specific application, to one that takes advantage of physical, virtual and cloud resident service elements to support the new device-/browser-/cloud-centric environment."(1)
The Barracuda Load Balancer FDC is a hardware appliance that is designed for virtualized data center environments requiring high throughput traffic distribution across application server infrastructures that consolidate storage and compute resources. The Barracuda Load Balancer FDC allows organizations to decouple the application access control and application security from the front end device. This architecture enables the front end device to remain solely focused on network traffic distribution, allowing the application access control and the application security to live closer to the application in the virtual environment.
The Barracuda Load Balancer FDC provides scalability and high availability to enterprise-wide TCP/IP services like web, Terminal services, proxy, VPN, streaming media and e-commerce. It is the traffic distribution layer in Barracuda's orchestrated solution that combines Barracuda next-generation firewalls - for secure site-to-site connectivity across physical and cloud data center locations, and virtual Web Application Firewalls (WAFs) - for security that can be co-located, migrated and scaled with virtualized applications. Highlights include:
-- Performance - Leverage modern and open software technologies on top of
standard Intel architecture hardware, delivering high 40 Gbps throughput
load balancing.
-- Availability - Redistribute traffic for efficient use of server
resources, employing advanced technologies for monitoring server and
application health, ensuring optimal utilization of resources.
-- Control - Deliver resilient and responsive services with granular
control over application traffic. Barracuda FDC provides management
capabilities for dispersed environments.
"The Barracuda Load Balancer FDC makes the most of packet processing by using the DPDK and Intel® architecture to provide fast 40 Gbps throughput for application delivery at a disruptive price-point," said Bob Ghaffari, Director Enterprise & Appliances, Network Platforms Group, Intel Corporation. "The Barracuda Load Balancer FDC enables Application Delivery Networks that provide application availability, security, visibility, and acceleration - all crucial in modern virtualized data centers."
According to a report from Principled Technologies, "the Barracuda FDC handled up to 60.71 Gb/s of throughput, a figure made even more impressive when you consider the appliance's list price. If your infrastructure can handle a large number of users making varied requests, the less likely you are to have problems where users time out or get frustrated. We found that the Barracuda FDC handled 9.99 million simultaneous web connections and 1.33 million connections per second. These numbers show that the DPDK-powered Barracuda Load Balancer FDC T740 can balance the web traffic load that the modern data center requires, and do so at an affordable cost." Microchip's New dsPIC33EP "GS" Family is Optimized for Digital Power Applications
Digital Signal Controllers Feature Higher Performance, More Integration, Lower Power, Smaller Footprints and Live Update Capability
CHANDLER, Ariz., May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --Microchip Technology Inc. [NASDAQ: MCHP], a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, today announced the 14-member dsPIC33EP "GS" family of Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs). The dsPIC33EP "GS" family delivers the performance needed to implement more sophisticated non-linear, predictive and adaptive control algorithms at higher switching frequencies. These advanced algorithms enable power supply designs that are more energy efficient and have better power supply specifications. Higher switching frequencies enable the development of physically smaller power supplies that offer higher densities and lower costs. Compared with the previous generation of DSCs, the new dsPIC33EP "GS" devices provide less than half the latency, when used in a three-pole three-zero compensator, and consume up to 80% less power in any application.
This new dsPIC33EP "GS" family includes advanced features such as Live Update Flash capability, which is especially helpful for high-availability or "always-on" systems. Live Update can be used to change the firmware of an operating power supply, including the active compensator calculation code, while maintaining continuous regulation. Variants from this new digital-power-optimized DSC family are available in an industry's-smallest, 4 x 4 mm UQFN package for space-constrained designs.
Other key features of this family include up to five 12-bit ADCs with as many as 22 ADC inputs, providing total throughput of 16 Mega samples per second (Msps) with a 300 ns ADC latency. The dsPIC33EP "GS" devices include 12-bit DACs for each of the four analog comparators, for higher-precision designs. The two on-chip programmable gain amplifiers can be used for current sensing and other precision measurements. Including these advanced analog amplifiers on the device reduces the number of external components required, thereby saving cost and board space. These features, combined with the overall high performance of the dsPIC33EP "GS" family, make it well suited for a wide range of applications, including the following examples: computer & telecom (e.g., AC/DC and DC/DC power supplies), industrial (e.g., solar inverters, LED lighting, HID lighting, battery chargers, projectors and welders) and automotive (e.g., LED and HID headlights, DC/DC converters), among others.
"Customer adoption of our existing dsPIC33 digital power families has been outstanding, with design wins in a wide range of power-conversion products, globally," said Joe Thomsen, vice president of Microchip's MCU16 Division. Turtle Beach Corporation Partners With American Hearing Aid Associates For Groundbreaking HyperSound Clear(TM) Hearing Solutions Product
Agreement Will Make HyperSound Clear(TM) Hearing Solutions Product Available to the Nation's Largest Network of Hearing Healthcare Providers When it Launches Later This Year
SAN DIEGO, May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Turtle Beach Corporation (NASDAQ: HEAR), the leading-edge audio technology company, today announced a new partnership with American Hearing Aid Associates (AHAA) as the Company moves closer to launching HyperSound Clear(TM), the first-of-its-kind directed audio solution that improves sound clarity and speech intelligibility for individuals with hearing loss. This newly formed partnership will make AHAA - one of the nation's largest and most highly regarded networks of hearing healthcare providers - one of the first to offer HyperSound Clear when it launches later this year.
"We're dedicated to empowering and supporting our network of hearing care professionals by providing a portfolio of strong, customer-centric solutions that add true value to end-users," said Barbara Lewis, Director of Customer Excellence and Quality Assurance for AHAA. "We recognize one of the key drivers to accelerating audiologic treatment is continually innovating current technology and developing new ones, and HyperSound Clear is a great example of a new technology that has the potential to really improve the lives of people with hearing loss."
"We are obviously thrilled to announce this partnership with AHAA as they immediately understand HyperSound Clear's value proposition for the hearing healthcare market," said Rodney Schutt, Senior Vice President and General Manager for HyperSound at Turtle Beach Corporation. "HyperSound Clear is a great fit for the hearing healthcare industry, whether as a gateway product in the early stages of a patient's hearing health journey prior to owning hearing aids, or as an 'unplugged' entertainment solution after they've purchased hearing aids."
Added Tina Soika, President of AHAA: "HyperSound Clear's novel approach to delivering speech intelligibility makes it a uniquely effective solution, not only for individuals with hearing loss, but for their loved ones as well. We are excited to provide our associates with a wider range of hearing loss treatments than ever before."
HyperSound is Turtle Beach Corporation's fundamentally new approach to sound delivery that utilizes thin panels to generate an ultrasound beam that carries audio through the air. The panels direct sound in a narrow, controlled beam; much the way a flashlight directs a beam of light. When an individual enters the beam's radius, they hear immersive 3D audio, similar to wearing a surround sound headset. The characteristics of the HyperSound Clear audio beam have been shown to improve the clarity of audio and speech intelligibility in individuals with certain types of hearing loss.
In February 2014 Turtle Beach Corporation received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance to market the HyperSound Audio System to improve clarity and comprehension of sound. Researchers estimate that one in five Americans, and one in three people over age 65, suffer from hearing loss. Impacting over 48 million Americans, hearing loss is the third most common chronic physical condition in the United States after arthritis and heart disease. An estimated 360 million people worldwide suffer from some form of hearing loss.

The newly launched ASUS Zenfone2 has been trending online over the last few days and
is a hot topic of discussion in social circles. The product was unveiled digitally across
exciting micro-sites, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube by leading digital agency, BC Web
Wise, which recently won the account after a multi-agency pitch.
An exciting, completely unbranded pre-launch activity was conducted in the run up to
the launch, with the creation of a teaser campaign called Agent Z (http://www.agent-Z.in
[http://www.agent-Z.in ]). Agent Z was positioned at a new Saif Ali Khan movie launch,
with the premier of the same being on April 23rd. In the interim, two video trailers were
produced and released for the same and a Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/pages/Agent-Z/496767033810107?ref=hl) and Youtube channel
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXZVZMupQJE ) too were created. Users were asked to
register on the microsite to meet Saif and three winners were chosen out of over 2200
entries. On 23rd April, the Zenfone2 was unveiled on the Agent Z site. The winners got a
chance to meet Saif at the event.
Additionally, leading up to the launch, an exclusive #Zenmeetup was organised by ASUS
for its current Zenfone owners in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai where the
Zenfone2 was unveiled to this select group before it was revealed to the public. Over 1200
people participated from the 4 cities only within a 5-day period. While there were meet
ups organised for other cities and not for Delhi, due to overwhelming pressure from fans,
instead of a meet-up, ASUS decided to call all the Delhi Zenfans for the launch instead.
On Twitter, two trending activities for the brand were conducted using the hashtags
#CantWait4Zenfone2 and #Zenfone2HasArrived. On the day of the launch, fans got a chance to
chat live with Saif Ali Khan using the hashtag #SaiflaunchesZenfone2. The trend lasted for
over 7 hours.
Post the tremendously successful launch, all 3 variants of the Zenfone2 are already
out of stock on Flipkart. Be sure to follow all the action on Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/asusindia [http://www.facebook.com/asusindia ]) and Twitter (@asusindia)
and Instagram (@asusindia).

CycleBeads App Helps Kenyan Women Prevent and Plan Pregnancy with Just a Smartphone
NAIROBI, Kenya, May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Women in Kenya can now prevent pregnancy without side effects using a free smartphone app called CycleBeads®. The CycleBeads Android app helps a woman know which days she is fertile and which days she is not based on her period start dates. This information can be used to prevent or plan pregnancy. CycleBeads is the only app that can be used to effectively prevent pregnancy by simply tracking a woman's period start dates.
CycleBeads is based on the Standard Days Method®, a family planning method that:
-- Was proven more than 95% effective at preventing pregnancy when used
correctly in large-scale efficacy trials.
-- Is the most widely used modern natural family planning option in the
world having been used by +4.5 million women worldwide in +60 countries,
including Kenya.
-- Is designed for women with cycles between 26 and 32 days long
Cycle Technologies, the company that developed the CycleBeads app, is working with researchers from iHub in Nairobi and the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, to test its usability and impact.

This eight-channel integrated circuit (IC) provides up to 70x faster speed, uses over 20% less power, and occupies 40% less space than existing solutions--all factors required in today's faster, more localized, smaller end products. It is controlled by an eight-bit parallel interface, or via a standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) which is also used for configuration and monitoring. Multiple devices can be daisy-chained to support additional I/O points via the single SPI interface, requiring only three isolators for all channels to provide further savings in cost, board space, and power. The serial mode includes cyclic redundancy checking (CRC) for assured data integrity, as well as global and per-channel diagnostics for remote system monitoring.
Maxim offers both a complete reference design (MAXREFDES63#) as well as an evaluation (EV) kit with special prototyping features. The credit-card-sized reference design integrates the MAX14900E, a microcontroller, isolated I/O port, power supplies, UART, and USB port to simplify incorporating the device into the final OEM product design, as well as provide a means for quick evaluation.
Key Advantages
-- Low power; high voltage: The eight digital channels require just 3mA
(maximum) of supply current; operates from a wide supply range of 10V to
36V and thus compatible with the 24V rail of many factory systems.
-- High speed and drive: With an input-to-output propagation delay of
0.3usec (typical)/0.8usec (maximum), it can support fast switching rates
of up to 100KHz in push pull configuration. On-resistance, a critical
factor in static power dissipation is just 85 milli-ohms (typical) and
165 milli-ohms (maximum). It can drive current loads up to 850mA;
outputs can be used in parallel to achieve even higher drive-current
rating.
-- High integration and space savings: Housed in a tiny, 48-pin 7mm à 7mm
QFN package; uses significantly less board space.
-- Data integrity: Offers per-channel and global diagnostics/monitoring via
its SPI port, while users can access the I/O via an eight-bit parallel
port. The serial link includes CRC error detection for enhanced
data-link integrity.
Commentary
-- "Our proprietary, high-voltage processes and design expertise allowed us
to develop this switch," said Tony Partow, Executive Business Manager at
Maxim Integrated. "The processor interface offers critical features for
users, such as per-channel and global diagnostics, as well as CRC for
data integrity."
-- "This product is an excellent fit for programmable logic controllers,
building HVAC systems, and high-speed industrial applications," said
Susie Inouye, Research Director at Databeans. It packs leading-edge
performance into a tiny package, while also saving energy and ensuring
data integrity."
Availability
-- The MAX14900E is specified over the -40-degree Celsius to +125-degree
Celsius temperature range.

Mentor Graphics Enhances MicReD Industrial Power Tester with 4X Component Power Cycling and Thermal Testing Capabilities
WILSONVILLE, Ore., May 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced its next-generation MicReD® Industrial Power Tester 1500A product, which provides electronics components power cycling and thermal testing for up to 12 devices simultaneously. The MicReD Industrial Power Tester 1500A is the industry's only commercially available thermal testing product combining both power cycling and thermal transient structure function analysis for real-time failure-in-progress data for diagnostics. Based on market feedback and the success of the MicReD Power Tester 1500A three-channel product, Mentor Graphics has enhanced the product to accommodate more device testing for greater productivity and lifecycle performance, which will benefit industries such as automotive systems, hybrid and electrical vehicles, trains, power generation and converters, and renewable energy products.
Reliability is a key concern in these industries that use high-power electronics, so accelerated testing of these modules through a lifetime of cycles (tens of thousands, potentially millions) is critical for the component supplier, the system supplier, and the OEM. Power components are used for applications where electrical energy is generated, converted, or controlled and where very high reliability is required during many years of constant operation.
"Advanced thermal management is crucial for the design of power modules and power electronics packages," said Chang-Sheng Chen, manager, power devices packaging technology department, Advanced Package Technology Division, Electronics and Opto-Electronics Research Laboratories at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). "Our partners use thinner and thermally more conductive TIMs, new substrate materials and new interconnect technologies to decrease thermal resistance and increase the lifetime of their products. Power cycling tests are required to gather information about the lifetime and possible failure modes of these new devices; however, in order to have reliable data, statistical analysis is important. The new MicReD Power Tester 1500A with 12 channels can increase the throughput of our power tester by four times, allowing us to finish our projects significantly faster."
The award-winning MicReD Industrial Power Tester 1500A can perform power cycling tests of metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs), insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) and power diodes. Both power cycling and thermal transient measurements are conducted without needing to remove the components from the test environment. Measurements of both top and bottom transistors in half-bridge structures can be achieved at the same time. The MicReD Power Tester 1500A provides a user-friendly touch-screen interface and can record a broad range of information during test, such as current, voltage and die temperature sensing, as well as detailed structure function analysis to record changes in the package's thermal structure. A technician or engineer is able to see the failure as it progresses and determine the exact time/cycle and cause. This makes it an ideal platform for package development and quality checking of incoming parts before production.
"We are committed to serving the needs of our customers, particularly automotive and transportation customers, who have asked us to expand the productivity of the MicReD Industrial Power Tester 1500A," stated Roland Feldhinkel, general manager of the Mechanical Analysis Division at Mentor Graphics. "Knowing that their electronic components will perform to optimum standards is crucial for their success. Using the MicReD Power Tester gives our customers added confidence by helping them develop and validate both electronic parts and batches of parts for manufacturing with greater performance reliability."

The Spectra-Q engine extends Altera's Quartus II software leadership with new capabilities that deliver unprecedented compile time improvements, versatile and fast-tracked design entry, and drop-in IP integration. Now customers can design and implement at higher levels of abstraction for significantly faster design cycles to meet the next generation of design opportunities. Additional information on the Spectra-Q engine is available on the http://www.altera.com/spectraq webpage.
"As FPGAs and SoCs deliver dramatically increased capabilities with multi-million logic element devices, support for hundreds of interface protocols, and new hardened functional blocks, the productivity of software design tools must scale at a much faster pace than just logic element counts," said Alex Grbic, senior director of Software and IP Marketing at Altera. "The Spectra-Q engine is a game-changing combination of software technologies that dramatically accelerates the design process by reducing designs iterations, while continuing to deliver the industry's fastest compile times."
The Spectra-Q engine features faster algorithms and allows for incremental design changes without needing to perform a full design compile. The engine also features a hierarchical database that enables users to preserve placement and routing information of IP blocks while making changes in other parts of the design. This helps ensure stable designs, eliminates unnecessary timing closure efforts and reduces compile times. The new engine also includes a common high-level design compiler for better quality of results and tighter integration between the Quartus II software and a variety of different front-end tools.
Introducing BluePrint(TM) Platform Designer
Built on top of the Spectra-Q engine is an industry-first platform design tool called BluePrint that allows designers to perform architectural exploration and assign interfaces with greater efficiency. The tool reduces design iterations by 10X by allowing designers to explore and create legal IO placements up-front with real-time fitter-checking. The tool also includes a clock and core planning feature that greatly reduces the number of design iterations needed for timing closure.
Versatile and Fast-tracked Design Entry
The new Spectra-Q engine also fast-tracks design entry for software, hardware and DSP designers alike. With multiple versatile design flows, designers can target FPGAs with greater efficiency in the language or design environment they prefer. In addition to providing support for the latest HDL languages, the new engine is designed to support Altera's new A++ Compiler for HLS(TM) (high level synthesis) to create IP cores from C or C++ which significantly boosts productivity through faster simulation and IP generation.
Quartus-II Software and IP Version 15.0 Released
Altera also released its Quartus II software version 15.0 today, the FPGA industry's #1 software in performance and productivity. With this latest release, customers can take advantage of Altera's proven software tools which deliver industry-leading compile times. Altera continues to expand its optimized IP offering with the latest standard-based cores to enable maximum design productivity. The Quartus II software v15.0 introduces new Hybrid Memory Cube and HDMI 2.0 MegaCores for the company's Arria® 10 FPGAs and SoCs. The portfolio also includes an upgrade in features and device support for the company's popular JESD204B core to update Arria V support to 9.255Gbps as well as Cyclone® V support up to 5Gbps. IP debug toolkits for external memory interfaces (EMIF) and PCI Express are also available to help designers rapidly prototype and expedite qualifications with additional access points to perform test and debug on IP cores.

Bart Copeland, President and CEO, ActiveState, said:
"Docker has the potential to become the standard for application execution environments, but it needs to be extended in order to become a true enterprise solution. Stackato's latest enhancements address these limitations by giving enterprise users the ability to efficiently port, manage and scale Docker apps. In light of today's competitive realities, as outlined in our industry vision, enterprises must utilize leading-edge technologies like private PaaS and containerized apps to remain agile, and Stackato makes this possible."
Jeff Hobbs, CTO & VP, Engineering, ActiveState, said:
"Stackato's latest enhancements make it easier for enterprises to adopt and manage Docker. Users can leverage our application platform to instill governance and standards on their use of containerized applications, whether building Docker apps within Stackato or deploying existing Docker images, and manage them on a large scale without having to set up and maintain various networking, security and orchestration tools."

UNDP Launches Global Campaign against POPs in Geneva
BEIJING and GENEVA, May 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today launched POPs Hunter, its first-ever bilingual smartphone game, as part of an international campaign to promote the elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) -- or #StopthePOPs -- in Geneva, Switzerland.
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are a set of hazardous pollutants created by industrial processes. They are resilient in character, infiltrating ecosystems to spread across large areas, harming human health and the environment. Signed by over 100 countries, the 2001 Stockholm Convention on POPs specifies a list of these highly toxic chemicals which signatory governments ban, seeking to reduce and eventually eliminate their production and use.
Various programmes funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNDP to support the Stockholm Convention have found that increased public awareness of POPs is needed to make the results of work to eliminate them more sustainable. In response, UNDP and the Foreign Economic Cooperation Office (FECO) at China's Ministry of Environmental Protection launched POPs Hunter at the Seventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Stockholm Convention in Geneva. The game is part of the #StopthePOPs campaign, which also includes an official POPs animation video with subtitles in eight languages.
At the campaign launch in Geneva, the Director of UNDP's Montreal Protocol/ Chemicals Unit Jacques Van Engel explained the thinking behind the game: "we don't just want the game to be a success; we see it as a springboard to getting sustained and widespread participation from the public and other stakeholders, promoting behaviour change for a cleaner and safer environment." Mr. Van Engel was joined at the launch by Li Lei, Deputy-Director General of the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection.
#StopthePOPs aims to raise the general public's awareness of these pollutants: how they are created, how they spread, and how they cause harm. The campaign asks people to share the video and game on social media, in exchange for a chance to win limited edition POPs giveaways. The campaign also celebrates progress in combating POPs worldwide.
In addition to teaching people about POPs and celebrating POPs reduction efforts around the world, the campaign hopes to encourage governments around the world to continue making progress on the issue, aspiring towards a POPs-free future for all.
One of the advance testers, a university student from Beijing, had praise for POPs Hunter: "it's an interesting game -- I really like the design and the music, and I learned from it too."
To learn more about POPs, please watch the POPs animation video and visit our campaign page.
Download the game and become a POPs Hunter.
