Disc Read Errors (ps2) Old Thu Feb 26, 2004 7:50:31 PM #6312 Perm Link
Yea, I put one game in, and it won't play it claiming there is a disc read error. The only game it will play is FFX, so I looked it up and found my ps2 is probably really dusty, needs cleaned, and needs a break . .any one else had this kind of problem?

I had that problem. The disc tray was completely out of alignment. Had to buy a new PS2.

You get this problem when you constantly shut off your PS2 with the power switch instead of the power button in the front.

Word to the wise: don't get a refurbished PS2. I got one, and after about a year, it gets all dusty and insane and it won't play any of my games anymore. I need to buy a new one, but I don't have the money right now. iIve seen "Disc read error" too much...it makes me sick...

do you just leave it on stand by all the time? if so, try just shutting it off with no disc in it for a while, or get the extension of a sweeper and go to the back fan, disc tray, and front vents. It will help. It's also easier for it to read the disc when its on its side, with the ps2 logo on the front standing upright. aslo diagnosis makes the disc easier to read.

No, I do shut it off. I find that I can fix it, at least temporaily if I take it all apart, and dust the inside, then put it back together. Which takes like an hour.

I had a PSOne for a really long time and my dad wasn't going to get me a new one until the PSOne 'died'. Well it did; the engine stopped working and wasn't spinning the c.d.'s fast enough, it was just too old. The first PS2 game I ever got was FFX.

Actually you can get Sony to repair your PS2 for free. Just read this and do what it says.

Yes, sony will fix your playstation as long as the warranty is still in effect, but after that your wallet is going to be a lot thinner if you wish sony to fix it for you. As for disc tray being out of alignment . . .I've heard putting tape on the disc may help I'm not sure . .but just look it up in yahoo or something. You can find sites that will tell you things that will help. . . .

You can get your PS2 fixed by Sony for free even after the 90 day warranty. This is due to the class action lawsuit that was filed against them a while ago because there were so many complaints about the disc read errors, and the low quality of the lens. I too have heard about the tape method but it never worked for me, although it has for some.

The older games with the dark blue colored disc bottoms, get the "Disc Read Error" message the most on my PS2. And now a lot more of my DVD's aren't reading either, no matter what position the PS2 is in.

Awhile ago, after it didn't read, I took a vacuum cleaner (low power) and carefully sucked out the dust from the vents. I put the trouble game in and it played right away.

Sony really needs to get this problem solved, along with overheating, for the PS3.
Not related, but I read in PSMagazine early in the year that Sony's early development kits for the PS3 were overheating so bad that they melted some parts inside. The problem has been solved from what I've read recently.

Yeah, last year my PS2 fried itself out after playing a DVD movie in the upright position and chewed up Need For Speed Underground, GTA: Vice City and GTA 3, melted (literally) Need For Speed Hot Purtsuit 2 and flat out wouldn't touch PS2 games that were on CD's. I sent it into Sony and they gutted it and rebuilt the whole thing free of charge. They even replaced all of the games that it damaged (I sent them in per the instructions they sent me) for no price. It was an original one (so I probably deserved to get a new one for being stupid and buying a first model # unit) so the warranty was way past expired. The moral of this story is only put it upright if it's playing PS2 DVD's. On a somewhat related note, Blu-Ray disks (PS2 CD's) cause alot of problems on both mine and all of my friends PS2's. Many times I've heard them rattling around as they spin. for some reason they cause more problems for me than old PSX games do. On the new PS2 this might be different but I'm not sure (I don't have one).

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

The only thing my ps2 plays easily without fighting is dvds. I don't use it that often mostly when I'm bored, but yea... I'm sick of fighting with it... and since it didn't really ruin anything of mine at all, I might just ask for another one, or a ps3 whenever they come out. It depends how long it takes me to really hate it.

I embarassed my cousin once by fixing his playstation for him. He's older then me and has a humongous ego. I told him my dad had fixed my Playstation before and if he dropped it off he'd take a look at it. But my dad never had the time so I did it.
It was really dusty and he'd spilled soda in it somehow.
Llama made a couple snide comments about a a younger girl fixing his playstation. He also said "When your Playstation gets hot, just take a break and let the engine cool off... don't pour soda on it."
