i would go ahead an switch, but i don't feel like setting wine up to play my games...

But it is true. I've been using Linux only for a year and a half. I haven't had any problems like I've had with Windows (lockdown, DRM, bla).

i have not had drm problems and i got it pretty stable once i got rid of nvidia firewall.

Except for today when my explorer.exe felt like crashing...

I agree that Vista adoption is gonna die pretty damn fast the closer it gets to that date. But a massive Linux changeover is the stuff of fantasies.

Linux adoption doesn't need to have a huge changeover.

It the adoption rate of Linux continues to climb, you'll start seeing more and more programs work on every platform. Watch what happens when games are all released for Linux, gamers will flock not needed to either pirate or buy Windows.

I doubt that is going to happen anytime soon, even if only because of the hardware side of things.

Apparently you haven't been reading lately. AMD is committed to providing full Linux support in all its hardware. Intel already does this. Nvidia will follow... maybe not in an open form as AMD, but they will follow.

Graphics is the sticking point and even from my use, it is great. Sure, Crossfire support isn't there, but AMD will release support.

Until nVidia throws the full amount of support behind the OS as AMD has (and that in itself is an "if," because they don't need to), gaming on Linux is but a novel concept. When combined with Linux users compulsive and strange need to have everything developed for the OS open source and Microsoft's annoying but admittedly successful Games for Windows campaign, the idea of mass amounts of gamers being brought to the system due to mass amounts of games being developed for it is merely a distant possibility.
Yes, Vista kinda blew, but I hardly think one stumble is going to do much of anything in the long run on the home market; especially if Microsoft is moving to replace the OS this fast. The fact that PC gaming is so intertwined with Windows by default due to DirectX being so widespread and dominant kind of puts a damper on things as well.

DirectX 9 may be a widespread thing but DirectX 10 is not something most gaming companies are doing. OpenGL 3 is coming out soon that will truly be great. There are a bunch of abstraction layers for all systems that can be used.

The PS3 uses OpenGL.

And the 360 uses DirectX. The fact that both of them are consoles makes it pretty much irrelevant anyways.

Actually, the major games by most game studios on the PC have been defined by DX10. That is why Crysis was such a huge deal in the months coming up to its launch despite being more or less a meh game. You may be confused with DX 10.1, which has been all but ignored by everyone but ATi. If the upcoming OpenGL 3.0 isn't appreciably better than DirectX 10, then no one will likely give a shit whether or not it is supported by other OSs, which is essentially the same attitude that the API has faced since the GeForce 6 series and is a large reason why ATi is in such arrears. They ignored DirectX advances for the X800 group, and got their asses handed to them by the 6800 despite having a faster card.

Now when that happens i will switch.
I dont for see that in the next year.
