I disagree. I find that a highly arrogant presumption on the part of Americans.

My only exception to this is, I think you should have to know English to live in America.

For that requirement, it needs to be the national language.

Otherwise, you can't force it.

There may be no foreign language to the US of A, but there most certainly are foreign languages for individuals, communities, maybe states (don't know about that), schools that teach in one language only, etc. "Foreign" may be a sub-optimal word here

Actually, I knew that there was no official national language. OTOH, I was taught in primary school that when the US chose their national language, English beat German by one vote ;-)

I'm trying to learn japanese on my own, its actually going pretty well. still not that fluent. after that i want to learn spanish and cambodian, i used to be able to speak a lot of cambodian when i was little but i forgot almost all of it. my best friend for most of my life, and now my cousin in-law() is cambodian.

Cerise: Lol!!! Well definitely spread some of that "Spanish Sunshine" this way cos I SUCK!!!!!!!!!!! lol.....I don't think any language comes close to anyone's individual home language. Honestly.

I think its just generally expected that you go to a country and blatantly disrespect the nation by not learning a bit of language before you visit. Learning a language in the US isn't compulsory although a lot of stateside colleges, universities etc., are looking to make them a more enforced part of curriculum. And more colleges are reacting by expecting some majors (think English etc., at some colleges) to actually have foreign language knowledge come graduation and receipt of bachelors degree. I do think it could be useful (especially with such a strong immigrant population in this country) to make foreign language compulsory but i'm not sure if it'll happen. Also, I think a united people could certainly make that come to pass- but, then again, how PC would that be for anyone? I think politically correctness is always at the top of this country's social agenda.

ExShinobi: That's totally how my high school was. It was mandated (as gym was) for my high school. I'm not sure how they found a way to pass THAT through the system....but they did and currently do- at least there is variety at some schools.... Not everyone really likes Spanish language that much and they teach such useless phrases!

Aron: Ohhh yess I found that out a long time ago. Because English isn't technically a language its a nationality of people then it CAN'T be a language for this country (although I think I did mention that I read somewhere they were looking to institute spanish as the official language of the country...go figure!)....I am completely for American as the national language. I think it would only be the right thing to do. I think providing documents in any language from local and state government is senseless due to continuity. If individuals can receive those materials, with no problem, then what is their incentive to learn English? Why would they need to? I think we in America can surely cater too much to other individual's tastes at risk of politically correct.

Sinistra: You speak a good point Sinistra! I think you definitely should know English to live in America and I think we can all appreciate if a few phrases are known too. Too many times at my job do I have to pull out my semi-plaza sesamo spanish to talk to customers who don't understand the lingo. It sucks so bad when I have to and I feel miserable if i'm not able to communicate as I want to. Its kind of unfair.

I know what you mean about close friends and family knowing the language and you want to know too...it can be SO rough when you hear them speak and you're like "OOH I CAN DO IT TOO" and then you do and gobbly-gook comes out of your mouth (lol am I the only one that happens too?) well if anything else terribly fails and the shrapnel gets lodged into my face in fiery bits, I can always say "Tengo el gato en los pantalones" and pray for the best....
