Christmas Season Old Tue Oct 30, 2007 8:58:47 PM #43552 Perm Link
As some of you know, I am a college student who works at Toys R Us.. and let me tell you.. SEASON SUCKS. Its not even November and I am already working 4-12 every damn night. They still haven't hired us seasonal help for the back, we are getting a truck everyday of the week, except weekends, and still only the same 5 guys working their asses off every night. Sorry for the rant, but any of you young people looking for a job, just think before you apply at a major toy store chain. lmao. Any one else have a job that picks up around now?

Heh I wish! Lenscrafters is getting absolutely no business! No business means no lenses to cut. No lenses to cut means hours get cut. Hours getting cut means less money Konojo will have to spend/pay bills. Be greatful for what your getting, even though the workload should be balanced for ALL employees. By the way, which Toys R Us do you work at? I might need me a part time-season job if this keeps up. Lol.

I just got a seasonal job at a gift basket store. It's interesting, making 120 gift baskets a day. It's a very repetitive job, but I'm making money so what can I say.

Apply to any major retail store now. They are all hiring for season. The number of employees go from like 75 to almost 200 during season.

I mean, I wouldn't be complaining if I wasn't in school. But when you Wake up at 6AM, go to school all day...drive 35 miles back home, have a half hour to yourself, then go to work. It gets to you. Especially when the store starts closing at 12 AM. So when we close at 12AM I will get out around 1 or 2 AM, last year sometimes 3-4 AM. Getting 2 hours of sleep then waking up for class is NOT fun.

I certainly hope that at least you are getting paid overtime! I know when it comes to bonuses it might suck, but overtime is always nice! I am looking for a job, but I don't think I want a seasonal thing... as you say it is too much work!

So, Haggard, have they started to get in things for Black Friday yet? Any inside scoop on what hot toys will be for the black friday circular? I have a ton of presents to buy for this year.

Also it royally sucks to work til 12am. Luckily I work at a locally owned grocery store and we close at 9.

I work in a deli and around this time of year people will line up to get our cooked turkeys, and
they'll take like 4 or 5 (which is about how many fit on 1 spit) each so we have to cook non-stop, hold a megaton on reserve, clean out the oven between spits, deal with the regular customers ,and clean and cut everything else as usual, as well as make all the platters, take all the calls, and stay open past closing hours when theres people left to be waited on. and only 2 of us on duty at a time!
Maybe they'll change it to three but I'm not sure.
no overtime for me either or seasonal bonuses and we have to work actual thanksgiving too.

I think I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time
I think I've forgotten this before. . .

I keep trying to figure out why people fall for this shopping madness. If you want to buy a gift for someone, why do it at xmas? Just get it in June or August or whenever you see the perfect gift! That friend might not be alive byt the time xmas rolls around!

What woul dhappen if people refused to participate in the shopping madness during xmas? Has anyone considered opting out?

No one is going to opt out. I know all the stores would lose hundreds of millions of dollars in business.. Our store makes over 3 million during the LAST week before Christmas. And its not a store that sells 1,999 dollar TVs, or computers. Its Toys. Its insane.

I agree as well. Opting out is not a fad that is about to hit anytime soon. I do agree that if you want to buy a gift do it when you have the urge to. I tend to do that sometimes as well. I also know of a few families that do all their gift giving AFTER the actual holiday so they can get better deals on clearances.

I have no idea why Elmo is still so popular.

I hate the Toys R Us catalog!!! My nephews actually ask for the whole page for gifts... of course I don't even pay attention to that. Instead, I take them with me to the toy store and they choose what they want within my range of money. I've found it is the best thing, and they get it on December 20th or so, that way they'll have enough time to play with their choice until they get the other stuff on the 25th from Santa.

I totally agree with Konojo, I wish business were more balanced out, I work at a small technology store that does computer repairs and we hardly get any customers, fortunately there is me, Steph and Hager (with an umlaut on the a (umlaut means those 2 little dots)), between customers we play all sorts of games people sell to us on LAN, so its all fun. Most of the jobs are people too lazy or stupid to press the power button, when they unplug their computer and bring it in, their problem is usually fixed, other times a simple virus scan is all it takes. I love my job and the 2 people I work with, we have so much fun, its almost like I'm getting paid to hang out with 2 of my best friends. Find a job like mine and you will be in heaven, because whats the point of working if you don't like your job, life is way to short to be doing that to yourself.

I don't think you can say that NOBODY is going to opt out because I know more than a handful of peple who have chosen to do so. I DO think, however, that the idea has to spread before the affect is noticeable.

where I work, I manage the store...
& its hell.
no, in fact, its worse than that...lol....
lets just say the holiday season will be over before you know it...
& i'm sure we'll all miss the christmas bonuses/excess hours/slightly inflated paychecks...
SO...I can't complain so much. I think its easier to be as bright and CHEERY (even if it kills you) as possible & laugh silently in the back of your head about how much you wanted to (insert derogatory term here) that sonofableep for buy 28 items and returning all but 2 of them. But I can be honest (and many a failed retail job can attest)...if you aren't happy, make plans with other places the moment you realize this fact. Don't be miserable if you dont have to be... just wait until the holiday is over. lol

Well to be quite honest... A handful of people are not going to affect anything. Those handful of people could easily be replaced by new mothers.

Here is a civil rights problem if I ever heard of one. Manager of a mobile home court sends out pamphlet to tenet's that states no declarations this season.

Christmas decorations are a way that many people celebrate the birth of Christ, which means this is a violation of freedom of religion. What you guys think?

I don't care if I'm broke on a holiday, as long as I can get together with the family and have a nice meal!

Most of my Christmas gifts this year are homemade in some way or another.
