»Wash Those Keyboards

Did you know you can wash most electronics with water? I guess it is news to NPR. A reporter decided to wash his keyboard. As long as the electronic stuff isn't powered, it should be fine. Rinse with distilled water, though.

Quote

Studies show that computer keyboards have more bacteria than toilet seats. But it's hard to clean all those keys. So some people advocate an extreme solution: Throw your keyboard in your dishwasher. At first glance, this seems insane. But the computer-keyboard-in-the-dishwasher advice is all over the Internet. And don't we wish it were true? My keyboard is an old Hewlett Packard that's encrusted with a kind of mysterious black grime. I thought, "Well, why not try my KitchenAid?'" I ran the experiment one night. I put the keyboard on the top rack, cord and all, key-side down. I used a little soap, and hit "normal wash." (I didn't want to pots 'n' pans it.)

I think I'll pass with my G15.

I once put a TV remote through the clothes washer and dryer (it got mixed in with the sheets). Came out smelling like Downy and working fine.

I never thought that you could do that for some reason. But I would agree that your keyboard would hold alot of nasty germs.

One I dropped my laptop (when off) into a pool. I let it dry, turned it on, and it worked fine.

I also had a similar experience. I took my laptop on a River running adventure, and lost it in the river. On the return trip, I found it. Well, I just knew after a week , it would be too waterlogged to work, but not so, it worked, and continued to do so for another year.

I could believe this, since most of us eat at the computer and food gets in there, and some people don't wash their hands after using the bathroom or pick their nose and share computers. Or even sick people...ugh.

Actually, I always make sure my hands are clean before I touch my own keyboard and mouse.

Nothing worse then someone eating Fries from some fast food place and then using your computer, or gaming controllers....

I wash my hands a lot anyway, but I've got a younger brother that hops on my computer who picks his nose, comes right out of the bathroom (he washes his hands but I only hear the water, who's to say he really washes them right?) and he has a lot of bad habits, so I could only imagine the nice ecosystem growing on or in my keyboard...

I've heard of people taking their keyboard in the shower with them to clean them up, but I think I'll pass. It may work, but I don't want to take any chances.

I would totally try this if I had a spare keyboard, but I don't and I don't want to risk being stranded without one

Keyboards are disgusting, though, especially public ones. I hated using the computers at my school because people rarely every washed their hands after using the restroom =\

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

In a recent computer magazine, and I'M NOT KIDDING, they ofer this:

Place your keyboard keys side down in the top rack of the dishwasher. Turn off the auto dry and run it through a cycle. Then allow to dry upside down until completely dry (2-3 days).

You can't make that kind of thing up!

That's legit advice... It may sound stupid but water does not harm electronic components if it is off.

I just tried this dishwasher idea with an old and dirty keyboard. It's now drying. I'll get back to oyu on it in a week, when I'm sure it's dry to let you know how it works.

It is REALLY clean!

I wash my hands a lot and don't really eat much at the computer.

But sometimes my brother would pick his ear and there'd be gross ear wax on the mouse. I punched him in the ear after the fourth time it happened.

my wireless keyboard survived a recent under-the-tap Q&D wash with subsequent drying-of-individual-components (tools: screwdriver, hair-drier and a towel)
