Ads in Video Games Old Wed Nov 15, 2006 11:57:29 AM #27797 Perm Link
Well I was in my language Arts class in high school and my teacher gave me a interesting article today. It was about ads for like mcdonalds and Burger King in Video games.

What do you guys think about this? My personal opinion would have to be that it is alright if you have it in the intro of the game to where you can skip it if you want but if it were throughout the whole game I would be very angry.

All Opinions Welcome.

depends on the kind of ad. Subtle ads don't bother me, I mean, say having McDonald's exist in the game world. Then the player could have the character they're control turn on a TV and there's a McDonald's ad or pass of McDonald's billboard or even order the food. I actually think, done well, that could be rather clever. Y'know, as long as they don't do it like Sobe did with Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee.

Actual ads detracting was gameplay disturbs me. It makes me think that, eventually, they'll do those intrusive large pop-up ads they have on TV nowadays.

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

Ads bother me in something I already PAID for. I'm not paying to see more ads. It is the same with the movies that play ads before the movie starts. Sorry, I don't think so.

I think ads are cool in games like BF2142, where they will appear on billboards around the city, and only regarding things you search the web for.

So, they can fit in a game, as long as it is placed cleverly.

How do they ruin the games fun? Does a small add within the game effect that that much? I suggest that you stop being so sensitive and enjoy the game.

Those ads are NOT cool considering they install spyware on your system to track your web browsing! How is that cool?

Have you ever played NFS Underground 2? It has Cingular ads slapped all over everything. They are saying that games are getting more expensive to produce (which I still think is bullshit, personally), so ads should at least balance out the $10 price increase that seems to be sweeping over the industy like a wave. But there is no sign of that happening, and 2142 came out priced normally for a PC game.

So, you are saying that they increase the game's atmosphere? I can understand that. But they could come up with fake ads to do so, or at the very least not try to infect your PC with spyware.

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

I don't know how to quote, so I am going to go down the list.

NFSU 2 was a good racing game, but its ingame advertising sucked. Name one city where there is a Burger King every block. No offhand Starbucks comments necessary folks.

As for the spyware, this is hype. What this "spyware" is, is a simple program that sees what you look up in search engines and gives it to EA to put in the game. If this is so bad, then why do ANY of you use google? Did you know that when you search Google, they sell the information about what you search for to the government to store in a database to use as a tool for future political events? Is that not like infecting your REAL life with spyware?

I think that if it was SO bad, than EA would not put it in there. I realize why many people are worried about this "spyware", but honestly, as long as it does not hurt my computer or inflict on my play experience, they can advertise the hell out of everything to me.

It does hurt your computer by running and taking information from it and stealing resources in the process while you haven't told it to run. EA sucks and will not be getting my money. VU Games also sucks, by the way.

I honestly do not mind the ads in games, I think is adds an additional real life feel to the game. What I do mind, is that spyware that EA incorporated into their game.

I dunno, I haven't really done enough research about this spyware to know about it. My view is that BF2 is almost the same as BF2142, so I will just get that. Anyways, I was not aware that the spyware used up system resources.

Ads should not be in anything that people have to pay for. If there's ads in it, then it should be ad supported. If there's ads in it, then it better be free.

I don't like tha ads in the games too. I know that Need for speed Most Wanted and Need For Speed Carbon has ads for AXE, and some car insurance. But I don't really care.
