I haven't seen the film, but I probably (possibly) will at some time. I'm sure it's clownishly comical, but ...
I've never really liked anything Sascha Barron Cohen has done.

I have untraced ancestry from Kazakhstan, so I think it's very cheap and shallow for Cohen to be so grossly and specifically affronting to a real people, culture and civilisation.*

Contrast this to JetLag Travel's tourist guide to Molvania: A Land Untouched by Modern Dentistry - http://www.molvania.com - witty humour that draws on obvious stereotypes, without directly singling out particular people or nations. And their guides to other mythical but obvious places like Phaic Tan and San Sombrero...

Oh, I'm not saying to you that you shouldn't enjoy the movie. I just wanted to discuss my concerns about the film and hope you can see where I'm coming from. Like I said, I haven't seen it, but some time I probably will.

The Kazakh government has been really annoyed by the Borat character and tried to sue Sascha Barron, but even they're coming to the realisation that it may be better to run with it and reach out to movie-goers to show them the real Kazakhstan. Myself, I don't know much about the country. I have some ancestry from there, but only going a long and untraced way back on my maternal grandfather's side.

Lemme just say its the best movie ever, saw it twice so far

But, i apreciate it the most due to watching all of the Ali G show and having desired this for a while. Sacha Baron Cohen is amazing and this movie must be seen.

Oh...He's supposed to from Kazakhstan. I thought he was going for some kind of cheap Iraqi ploy, but he went for both the Russian and Iraqi ploy. Nice!

Seriously, though, I'm going to see this this weekend.

Borat was funny in my opinion because he was so oblivious to American etiquette and all that stuff; he was an idiot. It was a crude movie, but still laugh out loud funny a number of times. That's all I really wanted out of it, and it delivered. I'm sure it will offend some people who take some of the material too seriously, but it's tough not to laugh at that scene where he chases his heavyweight buddy into the conference room. One guy walked out of the theater after that scene and didn't return; I can understand why, but it was still funny.

A) I hate it when people walk out of movies. Personally, if I hate a movie, I suck it up and watch the rest of it. I guess if it's REALLY bad, you can leave. But I think it's damn stupid for someone to leave because they find a movie too offensive because, goddamn, with the media and the internet today there is NO GODDAMN WAY you did not know what to expect from that movie. Serious, Borat is WAY over-advertised and it's quite clear they're out to be offensive, I have no idea how you'd be drawn to that movie no knowing it would be offensive and then leaving. Same with horrors like Saw III. People left during that movie too and I can't wrap my head around people not knowing the movie was going to be a gorefest and was not in the least for the squeamish. I just don't get how these people are buying movie tickets for $10.00 without knowing ANYTHING about what to expect.

B) I'm sure Borat is a funny movie, I'm not into comedies so I won't see it but I would give it a look if it ever aired on TV. However, I am so sick and tired of it's advertisements. I find them irritating...but then I ALWAYS find it irritating when they show commercials where they 'interview' the first showing audience and they're like "this rocks it was so funny! Funniest movie ever!" or "OMG! Leik, that was soooo scary LoL". But maybe I'm just an angry person.

Sorry, had to vent =D

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

Good point about "not knowing about the movie's general content ahead of time". It was an older guy who left the theater after that one scene, which even I didn't expect they'd show, but got a laugh out of regardless.

I saw Borat after reading some reviews saying, "This is possibly the funniest movie ever made." I don't agree, but had to see it based on that claim. I'd say Borat's humor is on par with Jackass 1 and 2, which I got a good laugh out of.

BORAT Victims upset at Being Duped: Here's an article from Yahoo News http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061113/ap_en_mo/film_borat_s_victims
By ERIN CARLSON, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - While teaching American humor to a gregarious and absurdly out-of-touch foreign journalist, Pat Haggerty realized something was off who WAS this guy?...

Two of Cohen's targets fraternity boys who made drunken, insulting comments about women and minorities are suing 20th Century Fox and three production companies. The lawsuit claims that a production crew took the students to a bar to "loosen up" before participating in what they were told would be a documentary to be shown outside of the United States, and that they signed waivers after drinking heavily. Studio spokesman Gregg Brilliant said the lawsuit "has no merit."

Cohen's behavior also wasn't funny to former TV producer Dharma Arthur, who claims she was duped into giving Cohen airtime on a morning show segment in Jackson, Miss. Cohen's live appearance, in which he said he had to go "urine" and hugged a bemused weatherman, led her life into a downward spiral, she told the AP. She is seeking an apology.

Although Arthur has said she was fired from the show, she told the AP that she left the station.

Kathie Martin, who runs an etiquette school in Birmingham, Ala., was also left out of the joke. Even though she was gracious and calm when Borat showed her nude photos of his son, Martin admitted she was "taken aback" by his schtick during their on-camera meeting.

"Unless you can figure it out for yourself, you have no way of knowing you have been tricked into being part of a childish prank with an R rating attached," she told the AP in an e-mail.

"And even if you figure it out, you've signed a release that Mr. Cohen's people say relinquishes any rights on your part to take action against them."

Ronald Miller, of Natchez, Miss., was baffled by the ruse. He and his wife attended a dinner at a plantation house, which they were told would be an interview with an "Eastern European television reporter coming to Natchez to film social customs in the South," he told the AP.

Borat disturbed guests, Miller said, by making anti-Semitic remarks and saying slavery was wonderful. He also invited a dinner guest a woman posing as a prostitute to join the group.

In another scene in the film, former "Baywatch" babe
Pamela Anderson was attacked by Borat's alter ego at a book signing, and he later chased her through a parking lot.

Did she learn of his antics in advance? Yep, claims Anderson.

"I love Borat ... Of course (Sacha) and I planned this years ago," she wrote in a recent post on her Web site. "And it turned out perfect I'm so happy for him."

As mentioned "Borat" is British comedian provocateur Sacha Baron Cohen for Da Ali G Show, an unstaged and unscripted show in which Borat interviews people who believe that he is a real Kazakhstani television journalist.
