It is slow, doesn't read CDs, and is expensive.

It doesn't read CDs!

How can they release a drive that doesn't read CDs? That seems like a bad move. You need two drives if you want to use any CDs. Stupid.

Sony is in a bad place right now.

Blu-ray is good for computer users because of the increase in storage space over HD-DVD, but the content side of things makes me cringe. Plus no CD support.

I need a solution to backup 30GB of data and I don't want to use multiple disks.

I've been using a removable hard drive, but I want something that it optical. Hard drives break easily Smile.

ever shot an optical medium with a soft-air gun from a few inches distance ? or a had drive ? that's the only true way to test if something breakes easily Wink

Regardless if the media is fragile or not, hard drives contain moving parts and can break even in storage. For optical media, you only need to worry about CD rot and scratching. You should always backup to some type of external media (tape, CD, DVD, etc).

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think we are looking at this the wrong way. Who doesn't have a CD reader on their computer these days? I mean, to no have one you'd have to own something along the lines of a Commodore 64. I'm starting to think that the format is going to crash and burn for movies, but maybe the push from computer consumers wll prevent it.

Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

I only have one optical drive in my computer. It is a DVD+RW burner.

I don't plan on adding another optical drive, but in this case, if I wanted to replace it, I can't. I use CDs all the time.

Even though it's often cheaper to get two seperate ones than one all in one?

I've seen DVD RW drives that don't burn CDs. And what about early DVD burners that only could handle one format? The multi-format ones were rediulously expensive when I first saw them.

I can see where Sony is coming from when they say that i will only take 1 disk to fit what would be 2-3 HD-DVD's but the fact that they try to corner the market with their Proprietary formats like they did with the UMD's for the PSP is not right so for this reason i say to hell with Sony and their Proprietary mentality and live XBox 360 with the HD-DVD.
YAY...long live 360..

You know, if you say Blu-Ray is a proprietary format than HD-DVD is as well. And don't worry about UMD. It has failed just like everyone with a brain expected it to. It might even lead to the failure of the PSP (think about it: all they were selling for it was movies because all of the games are shit).

I've not encountered a DVDRW drive that can't read CDs either, but that isn't why I have two drives in my system. I have two drives(a CDRW and a DVDRW) because that way I can leave the disks in for the two games I play most often.

Yeah, Sony isn't releasing a format like the UMD on the PC. This is a format war that harks back to the old betamax days.

The consumers will lose in a format war and corporate powers are blinded by greed and corruption.

This Blu-Ray crap isn't proprietary at all. It is a standard, but the problem is that it is competing with another standard.

Format wars are bad for business. Look at DVD+-R, Beta/VHS, All the stupid memory formats...

Well by me saying that Blue Ray its a proprietary format may be exaggerated or wrong (yup i can admit when im wrong) but what i mean is that Sony developed this format and bottom line is they are in control of it. as far as UMD goes the big fuck up was not allowing other companies/3rd parties the ability or rights to make UMD's, ( proprietary) thats one of the reasons they failed because they were trying to control or prevent UMD from being pirated which may i say still failed for the fact that hackers were able to create ISO right from the UMD's ... and still play pirated games from the Memory sticks.
