Bluray and HD will never merge into a single standard.

I won't be buying any next generation DVD system. I have no need to while DVDs are perfectly fine.

Blu-ray will win. The power to destroy a planet is insignifigant compared to the power of being a major movie studio and hardware manufacturer as well. PS3 may very well be the first next-gen player many people own, and they'll be putting out a million a month from 11/6-3/7. Meanwhile HD-DVD will have their own expensive players, or an expensive add-on to the 360. We all remember how well add-ons to consoles do in the marketplace (Dreamcast DVD, Genesis CD, N64 CD anyone?).

It will be the porn industry that decides which format will win. Same as before.

There is much truth to that statement. The porn industry decided the Beta and VHS battle.

Sony has a lot of marketing work ahead of them. Ask the average consumer who doesn't play video games, "What's an HD-DVD and what's a Blu-Ray disc?" Most will relate to HD-DVD's, which are cheaper to make, though they don't hold as much info. The 360 already has a jump on Sony, so even though I'm a PS2 fan planning to buy a PS3, if any format is gonna win the war, I'd say HD-DVD...

Regular DVD has only been around for about seven years, and already they want to replace it... The HD-DVD players better play CD's and regular DVD's, otherwise, why bother switching?

HD-DVD would win in a vacuum because it has the 'HD' in it.

It is a logical thing. I'm going to buy a HDTV, why not a HD-DVD player?

HD-COCK sounds better than Blu-rAnus.

I predict the porn industry will choose HD-DVD as the format will proably be slightly cheaper to produce.

It'll sort itself out eventually if big set top hard drives with digital distribution don't make the whole thing irrelevant first (just like internet porn). Who buys porn on DVD? Really?

Anybody get a chance to view a Blu-ray disc on an HDTV?

I wonder if the average buyer will want to spend more for a small difference... Regular DVD on HDTV looks great as it is. How high do we need our Resolution to enjoy the movie? Why not just jump to 3D?
Sounds like the market is trying to tell consumers what to like... Again.

We don't need any new DVD standards because regular DVDs look fine on even very high resolution TVs.

This isn't like when DVDs replaced VHS.

That's exactly the case. There is no reason for a new standard to be forced down our throats. The movie studios just want more money.

The data side of things are different and we need more removable storage.

As a consumer I would like to pay more for the same content that I have paid for twice already.

It will come with features that I'll never use and are useless.

That was sarcasm.

Hell, I've been buying up Laserdiscs for some movies that aren't as good on DVD (notably, Star Wars and Blade Runner).

The Big Industries can shove all the new crap that they want but the bottom line is Us the consumers the ones that determine what new tech succeeds or fails, there are still people with out DVD Players in America now if these people have not purchased a DVD Player what makes you think that they will buy a Blue Ray player for a grand or a HD-DVD when you can buy a cheap DVD player for $60 bucks?? Take LCD,HDTV and Projection TVs not everyone owns these TVs and they have been around for several years now considering they continue to drop in price, 2 to 4 grand for a TV is not feasible for the average Joe much less a Grand for a Movie player....

So higher resolution, plus one disc for the film and tons of extras, on BR and HDDVD... When the HD player lowers to $100 bucks, and the movies sell for under $20 like DVD's(seen them for $25), and if they can play DVD's too, then I'll consider it.

Anybody know if an HDDVD player plays DVD's? I'm pretty sure the PS3's BR will be able to read blu-ray AND DVD's, since it will be backwards compatible with the PS2, which uses DVD-Rom.

HD-DVD and BD-ROM will not play DVDs by themselves. They both need extra lasers in the players. That being said, I doubt that ANY player will be sold without DVD support.

Yeah, they'd lose sales from potential customers of HDDVD/BR without a DVD reader pre-installed(red laser).
