Lazy...

So you don't mind waiting when it crashes, time fixing it, time lost in productivity due to horrible memory management and the Windows need to page, etc...? Smile

Some arguments are always left unfounded...

Slackware 9 running here. I also run a virtual machine, VMware, with Windows 2000 Server running inside it so I can do testing of my ASP stuff. All servers I build for fileservers, web servers, etc. all run Slack 9.

Kernel was recompiled to 2.4.26 so I could support my Promise card, enable more advanced networking features (load balancing over multiple ethernet adapters via multipath routing config, IPv6 tunnel to Hurricane Electric, etc), trim all the ugly modules that I have no use for, and turn off loadable modules altogether.

Uptime would be better if I bought myself a UPS. But meh...

ASP sucks. I use Mandrake 10.2 for my file/print/webserver at home (»http://www.aseville.com/systems.php?id=9). I'll be updating it sooner or later and testing out new distros. I've always liked the Redhat distros, though.

The problem with Linux is that there is no stable binary support. Without it, installations suck. This is an ideology that Linus has taken on. Most FOSS people do not want any non free software running. I'm sorry, you stifle progress with that mindset. If I have an ATI graphics card, I don't care if I have binary drivers as long as it works!

ASP does suck, but knowing how to program ASP does not. It's always best to know as much as possible, so you can do as much as possible, and thus, get paid as much as possible. Wink

Slackware for any REAL linux users. Wink

I agree with you. I'm trying to learn AJAX style programming and it is a pain because there is no easy way for me to find out what functions are available like in PHP.

Are you programming in ASP or ASP.NET?

For those of you reading this that don't know the difference, .NET version of ASP is compiled while the former is a script.

Programming in ASP 3.0. ASP.NET looks promising, in terms of organization and ease of code modification, but I'd rather work in PHP because of the following:

1) Open Source - Do you want some component to use on your website made in ASP.NET? Expect to pay for it. Developers using ASP.NET also use other Microsoft languages and they like to charge you for everything and hide all source code from you so no modifications can be made. On the other hand, PHP developers often share components and code with the development community. This makes more code snippets readily available for developers.
2) Hosting costs less than hosting an ASP.NET application. These hosting packages, often Apache/MySQL/CPanel or Plesk, have far more options available in their control panels when compared to IIS based control panels.
3) PHP.NET's online manuals. One of the best online manuals available documenting all functions in a consistent and organized manner. RTFM!

Don't let me stop you from adding the other 1,232 reasons...

ubuntu and debian fighting for my box here.
I love debian-style distros. i've tried mandrake. i've tried red hat. i've tried slackware. i've tried arch. i've tried gentoo. but debian and ubuntu tie on first place, gentoo comes second, arch third.
i'm too lazy for gentoo Wink (ever tried compiling a system with x.org and kde on something like »http://www.aseville.com/systems.php?id=44 ?)
games and video editing are keeping windows here... Sad
php rocks. i've tried asp.net. it's cool, but it's nowhere as widely supported as php - and the community is microsoft-ish...

I JUST installed Mandriva on a new partition on my Dell laptop. I accidently put Lilo in the wrong place when I installed though, and I ended up with a phucked up MBR. So yeah, have to fix that, and hopefully I can finally join the rest of the world and start using this excellent OS. (since I don't play games anymore, except NWN which has a LINUX run-time, woot)

I think the only thing that annoys me is ATI's lack of linux support (yes, I know they have the drivers but come on, they are HORRIBLE drivers compared to the winxp ones!) and other than that it is great. I'll be putting in my athlon 64 today WOOT!

Soon enough I shall too! The mobo I received today (and will install tonight) supports both pci-e and agp (in all of its 8x glory!) so I'll be able to have my xfx 7800gt running games and supporting linux, while the trusty ol' a-i-w 9700 does dvr & multimedia duties.

Say, did u know that although more exploits were found in the linux kernel than in windows, many more were fixed? Only 1 bug discovered last year remains, while 39 found in windows xp are unfixed.

Can you imagine if someone leaked the windows source code, how many exploits would be made and how many bugs would be discovered? Just from the ms installed trojans alone there would be havoc!

I didn't know that more exploits were discovered, but it definately makes sence since people can look at the source. But I knew that Microsoft isn't spending enough horsepower in fixing problems...
