Gas Price Gouging Old Thu Sep 1, 2005 1:02:34 PM #13071 Perm Link
It seems that the oil companies are taking consumers for a ride on the recent shit in Iraq and now in the Gulf. It is pretty fucked up when the price of gas goes up over 50 cents in one day with the same stock. Fuck these oil companies, the government should nationalize them.

it's our Government gouging the prices...How else can they pay for the War? Hurrican Katrina had nothng to do with it, those Oil rigs floating in the Gulf? we don't even get any of our oil from them, we import almost everything.

This si the biggest scam our nation has ever seen..and it's our governement that is scamming the public..isn't it convenient how the prices rose two days before one of the heaviest traveled Holiday weekends in the nation??

You're kidding right? The OIL COMPANIES are making the profits and are PRIVATE companies. It is not the government price gouging as much as any person that hates the US may think, it is strictly the stupid oil companies. When these companies see NET profits rise sharply, there is a problem.

I cannot stand the US bashing for reasons that don't make sense.

$.50? Wow. The increase around here was only $.20 (from 2.70 to 2.90 or thereabouts). I do pity the poor sap with a BMW or Mercedes, though, as 92-95 octane went up a full $1.00 (from 2.96 to $3.98). It is fairly odd that any one would buy that the gas prices were due to the hurricaine, though, as prices went up even before it was found out that those gas supplies were destroyed.

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

And there is the proof of the gouging, before supplies even were cut, the prices were raised. Pitiful.

Ohh, BMWs get nearly 30 MPG, at least my Mom's 530i does. It gets better milage than my Saturn does and using regular in its tank works fine.

Yeah, but many of the Beamers (V8 models) and most of the Mercs (ones that don't have inline 4's) run on the high 93 octane fuel or thereabouts or they suffer from ignition timing problems leading to, of course, poor fuel mileage.

See where your money goes...

<img src="http://www.areamike.com/mystuff/gas-price-breakdown.gif">

"Gas prices also vary from state to state for several reasons. Taxes are probably the biggest factor in the different prices around the country. Additionally, competition among local gas stations can drive prices down. Distance from the oil refineries can also affect prices -- stations closer to the Gulf of Mexico, where many oil refineries are located, have lower gas prices due to lower transportation costs. There are also some regional factors that can affect prices.

World events, wars and weather can also raise prices. Anything that affects any part of the process, from the moment the oil is drilled, through refining and distribution to your car will result in a change in price. Military conflicts in parts of the world with lots of oil supplies can make it difficult for oil companies to drill and ship crude oil. Hurricanes have damaged offshore drilling platforms, coastal refineries and shipping ports that receive oil tankers. If a tanker itself is lost or damaged, or leaks its oil into the ocean, that will put a dent in the market as well."

Gas prices rose by an average of 80+cents here throughout the state of Indiana. The average is 3.19 a gallon..the high is 3.49.

The hurricane has had a big effect on the prices I admit, with the prices around here jumping up about 70 cents since before the storm, but I checked the prices from around here 1 year ago, and the price of gas was $1.70, and it was $3.29 today. Clearly there was more than just the hurricane going on here. The problem is that gas prices can be raised at individual gas stations. A base minumum price is set for each distributor (as in Exxon, BP, Gulf, etc.), after that it's up to each station owner to set what he profits. I'm telling you, it's not just the government and the companies profitting off this, it's also the gas station owners. I've seen those guys driving around in some expensive-ass cars, they aren't exactly struggling.

Well there is an investegation going on so far, I'm going to try to look into it and send a link for you guys. I really want to know what's going on. Last year in one of my pictures for photography I, a gas station showed unleaded at $1.65...today, the same gas station shows $2.99.
All I know is we're being played.

When I went to Round Rock the lowest I saw was $2.56, but that was in Giddings and small towns like that along the way, when I got to Round Rock it was $2.65.
